Been looking at buying a disco and have noticed that a couple of cars are starting to come as Cat C (insurance write offs)
How do these effect pricing / insurance.
Would you buy a cat C car?

Depends what state they were in. Cat C is usually the cost of repairs outweighed the value of the vehicle which isn't difficult with a disco, is it? So have a good look at them and see what need's doing and then decide for ya self. If you're thinking of buying a disco and hoping it'll hold it's price or be a good investment. Then you need urgent Psychiatric help!!

as stated cat c is more often than not just light damage but the cost of the repairs outweighs the value of the vehicle. As a ageneral rule insurance companies will only repair up to 60% of the value of a car.

There was a guy on here in the last couple of weeks that bought a landy and when he took it to the garage a year later found that his landy had been involved in an accident and that further to that it had been repaired so badly it needed half a chassis fitting.

If you want to buy a class C write off check it over VERY carefully.

The car i'm thinking of, the owner had lost the keys so the cost of new keys / locks etc would cost more than the car was worth.
The car has now been re-locked and VIC checked, but the owner wants roughly the same price as a non cat car.

Details dear boy details.. Some people have a strange idea of what Landrovers are worth.

So what year, what model/spec what mods & mileage & what price. Also do you know that all it needed were new locks or is that what he told you?? Has he got the receipt for the locks? & The VIC check sheet, or the letter of the insurance/bodyshop listing the repairs that were needed before the insurance company Cat C'd it??

Its a 300TDi Auto Discovery, 1994 M reg 5 door. 168K
Was told that the owner had lost the keys and the insurance company had written it off, the salvage company that bought it (and are now selling it) took it to a lock smith who opened the car for them, they had a good look round and found the spare key hiding somewhere in the car. It has had a VIC check and has MOT until Sept 09.
He wants £800 but is willing to take an offer.

Without seeing it I'd say it's worth half that. possibly £600 if it's in mint condition and has loads of service history and no rot. Get the previous owners details off the V5 and get in touch with him, and ask him why it was scrapped.
