Does anyone have any experience of using a tirfor hand-winch?

I was thinking of getting a tirfor hand winch for light, occassional use when out in my Disco. Does anybody have any experience with these winches? What sort of stowage space do they take up? Any thoughts or info will be appreciated.

They are bulky and fairly heavy, but much cheaper and more convenient than a car mounted winch. Worth getting.

I used to carry a tirfor but found it hard work and bulky, but with a couple of shackle's and a short rope i always got out of most greif using a high lift jack

Thanks, that was the other option, which I think I'll go for 'cos I've already got a high-lift. Just need to find a bracket to mount it to the back of my Disco now...

brackets are easy to find, scorpion racing do em for about £18.

I still think that £18 for two bits of bent metal is a lot.

It is, if you have the workshop space, the tools and the means with which to bend them yourself. I personally do not and will be paying the £18 that'll let me carry my high-lift safely and securely on the back of my Disco. Though I do wish that it was cheaper. Actually, come to think of it, I wish everything was cheaper!!!

chris wearabouts on your disco are you mounting your high-lift cos i got same problem ive seen on rear wheel carrier but dont know where to get that bracket from i got the high-lift mounting kit just cant make mind up where to put it regards colin

I want to stick it at the rear, to the side of the door, but I'm thinking that I might hang on 'til I get a ladder on the door and see if I can't rig up some kind of mount on that? If you don't mind could you let me know where you stick yours, or any probs you encounter on the way? It might influence my decission...

If you slip off the base plate some models will just squeeze under back seats if you dont bother cerrying roof rack bars

In my bob we move heavy machinery all the time, and tirfors are a god send at times. Agreed there a little bulky but if you can control that cable there great. One tip if you get one is a spare tyre from something like a wheelbarrow would be fine, wind the cable into it, it makes life much easier. They are slow but they work well.
Another option is A ratchet leaver hoist, there much quicker and really do the job

Looks awesome, if pricy! Reckon I'm sticking to the high-lift for now, due to the fact that I've already got one, which means it costs nothing!!! Maybe next year when the funding improves...
