Just been having a look on ebay as my seach continues.

Found this and it looks right up my street. More than I wanted to pay but if it's worth it then might worth a punt! Going to get up for as soon as they open tomorrow at 11am.

The garage owner said the previous owner was in the land rover owners club or something and its obviously modified so thought I'd ask on here if anyone knows about its history?

Land Rover Freelander Estate 2.0 TD4 ES HARDBACK | eBay

They don't have any service history but the garage bloke said it certainly drives well.

Damn, just realised its a boomin automatic!

Yeah, unless the guy forgot on the phone.

Worth looking being an auto? I imagine its going to be dog slow? At least they don't have a clutch that will go. Only problem is it is a little far to go and see if I like the auto.

You obviously haven't driven an auto recently.

Mine certainly ain't slow. lol And it isn't that thirsty either.

I was a late convert to autos - being put off by sluggardly boxes back in the 70's.

Have a read up on the Steptronic system before you drive it.

After a bit of trying to do better myself I eventually realised the electronic wizardry could do better than me - so now I just leave it in fully auto - except for a bit of fun on hairpin bends in the alps.

I'll never buy another manual.

We have the auto,
but if its step-tronic you can use it as a manual all the time if you prefer,,

wife drives in Auto I drive in manual, best of both,,,MPG is improved by using
manually as well..

on many of the rovers the steptronic is good but has problems and when they rear there head can be expensive
as to the freelander nice colour but thats about it for me
the milage/year for that price would put me off straight away £1200-£1400 maybe
if it had belonged to a forum member and he/she had put posts up of any upgrades or work done to the car another member would have bought it straight away so you may be just hearing sales mans talk
Ron

Looks low on coolant, spare wheel still silver hmmm

Good spotting, the silver doesn't bother me on the back but coolant could possibly be an issue.

So, does this have those flappy paddles? I've tried a newer renault with the flappy paddles and they were dire. I think it looks awesome though! Just don't wanna keep wasting my petrol.

Ron, the only ones I have found which are in that price bracket that don't initially need a lot spending on them are 1.8s. I found a td4 for 1200 but it had many many problems. I feel like I have exhausted most of the localish ones. (within 50 miles).

I've checked piston heads, ebay, autotrader. Had a browse around local garages.. Any more suggestions?

I believe the later ones don't have that cover on the engine,,
these early ones look much neater if you ask me,
does this cover fit all Td4's??

it is the td4 just a later cover on the engine just before they went to the smaller one, but take a look at the expansion bottle, or header tank, which ever one you like it looks a bit low on water,

Mudinuri has one in the for sale section...TD4 110000 miles

We have spoken, again his is an auto and slightly more than I wanted to pay. If I don't find anything else I may have time to gather a bit more money up though. However, I have a wedding and expensive honeymoon to pay for :(

Just my opinion ..If you have 2 grand to spend then get a petrol the same age / milage for a grand (mine was £850 with fsh) - keep a grand aside for any repairs that crop up.
There are just as many TD4 posts on here with problems as petrol..or what about the 2.0 Rover diesel engine model reportedly bulletproof those.

Are the rover diesel engines the xdi or what ever? pre 2001? They are nice and cheap! I was just under the impression the td4 was the one to go for. I really enjoyed the drive in the td4 today, more so than the 1.8 I tried yesterday.

Why would anyone want a petrol to spend a grand on repairs?
