does a v8 have an egr valve???

Not as far as I know ~ they don't need one. EGR systems were introduced to reduce particulate emissions from (specifically) diesels.

Of course, if I'm wrong someone will put that right :)

Most petrol engines nowadays have egr, V8 disco doesn't if its UK spec.
 
EGR systems were introduced because IN THEORY they MIGHT reduce oxides of nitrogen forming in the engine and coming out the exhaust.

You might well ask, "WHO CARES?".

Oxides of nitrogen are GOOD for the planet! People (farmers especially) spent the last 100 years inventing ways to get nitrogen into the ground, and before that they just used dung.

So, to achieve this theoretical waste of time, they force car makers to fit EGRs and they ignore the fact that the engine's fuel consumption will be at least 10% WORSE, thus increasing the CO2 emitted.

That's why we all take our EGRs off and bin them.
 
No EGR on V8's, some newer petrol cars have them fitted and newer diesels, to comply with Euro4 emissions standards.

EGR vlave are used to reburn exhaust Gas which contain Hydrocarbons (HC) which is unburnt fuel. Yes you loose power and MPG goes down, false ecom as you need to put your foot down more and burn more fuel..!
 
In diesels they are after the reduction in combustion temperature. Because the formation of NOx is highly temperature dependent, EGR works by recirculating 5-10% of the exhaust gases back to the engine air inlet in order to lower the combustion temperature (several hundred degrees), and lower the emissions.

And if you lower the combustion temperature the fuel will not burn 100% so you will lose power and need to put your foot down to compensate.

Isn't Nox what Viagra is made of? (no chemist, me)

Uh huh, EGR is nonsence, I wasn't disagreeing it ruins fuel econemy/power I was just commenting it didn't have much to do with unburnt fuel as said above, if anything it adds to this.
