Dodgy second gear....

Can anyone advise on a second gear that feels like it doesn't engage properly and jumps out when you come off the power? It also whines a bit when it goes into second but does drive ok? series 3 1971 diesel. 1st 3rd and 4th are all fine.

Fraid you got three choices:-
Live with it,
Recon box,
Strip it yourself and look.

My first S3 did the same but in first, a few quid spent soon fixed it. Its a few years ago, i cant remember exactly what i bought, but It wasnt expensive at all, just time consuming.

Most likely be the dedent spring on the 2nd gear.

If you drain your oil your are likely to find it in the oil

Can be replaced through the top of the box but easier (!) to strip it down. If you do go for the replace route (and not the live with it by holding the gear lever with you left hand ) then fit the reverse gear dedent spring as it is a little bit stronger.
