Got a strange problem with my Freelander today , turned the ignition, usual ilghts on the dash but turned the key and nothing happened, turned it back and tried again and it started fine, went to turn it off and engine kept turning as if trying to start, turn the key back to position 2 and egine fired up again, tried this a few times and kept doing it, then it switched off fine, any ideas ?
dont think it is the stop soleniod on the diesel pump because it wouldnt fire up when turning over by itself, could this be a sticky soleniod on the starter or a dodgy connection to the starter ? but starter didnt stay turning when engine fired like can happen if its sticks, anybody had this sort of thing happen before ?

The lead to solenoid is a +ve not -ve from starter relay which is triggered by ignition switch.it's possible you could have a relay problem, but it sounds like ign switch or the starter unit fault ( motor or solenoid connection.) Get a competent sparky to check it out for you, my bet would be ignition switch if it kept cranking when you released key.

The starter worked fine till I switched the ignition off , thats when it started cranking, with the key at position 0 , It hasnt done it again since, so fingers crossed it behaves for the moment,
