Not sure wether I should take mine to a garage which has good reviews etc for its major service or if I should really take it to a land rover specialist? Do you think the normal garage might not do certain things a 4x4 specialist would do in its service?

Invalid poll - No BoB option. Go stand in the corner!

:doh::doh:

It's a landrover - do it yourself.
I do. ;)

Need more options on the poll really but I voted specialist. I do stuff myself AND use a 4x4 specialist because a couple of the LR's I've had (P38 & D2) needed diagnostics and I haven't got the hardware. Plus I use them for breakdowns (e.g. Freelander clutch) too.

Do it myself. Cheaper and do it more often then the service schedule. Every garage is different, some are good and some are bad and that includes 4x4 specialists.

Poll sorted :)

I know this int the Series section but I take mine to an enthusiastic amatuer indie, but I've had a lot of problems with him.

Unreliable, shoddy workmanship, sub standard cheapo parts.....he seems to think if hitting with a hammer doesn't fix it your not hitting it hard enough

I might have to stop doing it myself :D:D

Yes, this is the Freelander section, you don't hit it with a hammer, you discuss its feelings and it goes a lots better after that.

HOW much needs doing? I did ALL oils, plugs filters and cooling in about four hours using axle stands and a jack.

You're keen. Oil and oil filter in about 20 minutes - plus getting the sodding under tray back on!

Most garages and even 4x4 specialists don't understand the freelander as it falls in between a car and a roughty-toughty 4x4 with a desperate chassis and high/low range etc. you usually won't get a good service from either.

And I speak from best part of 20 years in the motor trade.....

I get mine sorted by Terrain Vehicle who know Freelanders well. I also use a local garage where the mechanic has the same model Freelander TD4 auto as me. I do a little myself as well. Depends what needs to be done, what the weather is like and how busy I am as I have a drive/parking space at the side of a fairly busy road.

And you still send your vehicle to him knowing this?

Maybe you should hit yourself on the head with his hammer;)

I do the basics myself, fluids filters plugs etc but I leave the more technical stuff to a garage... Mine goes in on Tuesday for trimming belt, tensioner, water pump and while he's under there gonna change gear box and ird fluids.
I'm supplying all parts/fluids...labour charge of £150 I thinks its a good deal
