well, i was going to the airport today at 5am just got onto the m6 a my td4 started making a tinnie blade noise which i know as a turbo blade noise i pulled off the motorway and as i stopped in the sewrvices there was lot of smoke came out of the engine,, oil smell, with a misfire as if on 3 cylinders it sounded as if the engine was going to rev but i switched it off. i checked the oil level which was spot on before i left home now was on the min could this be a knackered turbo ???????? help

when it was unloaded at home there was a dinner plate size patch of oil under the car

Where a bouts, what was above the oil???

That could complicate it a bit, was the oil light on??

It could be oil loss causing the turbo to run dry, oil could be spraying onto fanimold and causing the smell etc???

was the dipstick still in place or had it been forced up out of its tube ?

thinking crankcase breather filter blocked, pressurising the crankcase, forcing dipstick up, oil out, loss of pressure and so on...

is the oil all over the front of the engine ?

Take the pipes off the turbo, take a peek inside and feel for excesive play.

If the turbo went, doubt it would sound like it was running on 3 cylinders?!
