Do I buy a Landy or not?!

My age hasn't got anything to do with it...if the landy is 25 years old or more...classic policy.

the only thing with classic is it limits you to a small amount of mileage a year, but then if uni is in the equation then it dont matter :D

Many classic car policies will not insure young drivers.
Toby, if you are getting quotes on line, you need to pick the phone up and speak to them, on line results can be very misleading and build up your hopes.
I would be very surprised if an 18 year old was insurable on a Defender at a reasonable rate. Start with the speciialist 4x4 insurers and brokers - Sureterm, Frank Pickles, Adrian Flux. Then check the NFU. Then look at the younger driver offers like Endsleigh. Then look at a commodity insurer like Direct Line or Churchill to see if they are having a mad month.
Finally, look at clever options - if you are not going to be the main driver and your Dad was willing to put the car on his insurance , see what happens if he insures with you as a named driver (some insurers allow you to build up ncb as a named driver so remember to ask). Also - look at a multi car policy with Admiral , each driver eearns ncb and is not exposed to the others claims but insuring more than one car with the same insurer generates a volume discount.
Be patient on the phone and try and maintain comparability between quotes - is it the same compulsory excess, even is it the same insurance period ( beware of the cheaper quote that turns out to be for only 10 months, not 12 !)
