Just noticed our 2.5dse smokes abit ,a small amount on tick over ,alot when you accellerate hard and hardly at all when cruising .

Is this fairly normal ?

By the way it has a plug in chip fitted .

I dont think smoking on tick over is right. Mine will smoke if I accelerate hard but thats it. Also, if the cruise control is set at a certain speed and you approach a hill and it cant maintain that speed and the gearbox drops into 3rd for example, I will get a nice cloud of black smoke then.

Ive read in the past from here the smoking can be caused by over fueling and/or not enough air making it through to the engine. Hows your air filter looking?? Does the box have an adjustable setting??

Mine has a chip fitted as well, plugs into the FIP multiplug and the manifold pressure sensor.

-Wills :)

I got a 2001 DHSE 2.5 BMW engine and mine dont smoke at all and i tow a caravan try changing the filters that means geting the wallet out though

I have noticed on these darker evenings (in the lights of following cars) a bit of smoke on hard acceleration & a bit on first start up. Car is chipped & has K&N filter. Decided that was time for a clean so put in a standard air filter & guess what, no real difference in performance or smoke !"?

As an x BMW employee the 5 series with that engine did not smoke, like the others suggest go back to standard filters and see how it performs.
As for the plug in box they aint the best coz they only generally bang up the fueling, Ihad one remapped by superchips and it went like a rocket with no smoke on standard filters and also out performed a plug in box rangey

smoking on tickover doesnt sound right, other than that though all diesels smoke when accelerating sometimes, was behind an new Audi today and he put his foot down off the lights and it was terrible.

Hiya

I agree with landy10

at the end of the day you cannot expect miracles with a plug in box
I had a new chip done on mine with the 3x larger intercooler and it goes like a train - yep on heavy accelaration it sometimes smokes but it very very rarely changes down even at high speeds and steep hills. but before the conv it used big time.......

& yep it has a K&N for whats its worth

mine smokes all the time, uphill, downhill, accelerating, it only stops when i take the key out.it is chipped but i have a problem with the fuel pump, so im replacing it, also maybe misfiring , hope its the cause of it.

A question is wether EGR makes a difference which i suppose it does, mine doesnt have., and the cataliser may be needing a look.

Mine smokes when I floor it, but not when just tootling along as I do normally. And I am un-chipped btw, I'm more concerned about upgrading the low-line radio to high-line spec at the moment...

As a general rule smoke under any load other than hard acceleration is not normal, and that goes for all German turbo diesels.

Morning Alfonso

Regarding the EGR & Cat

On the vehicle pictured a Series III hybrid running a 300 ex Disco Motor & boxes the EGR Was removed (blanked off)
However the big difference was the Cat
when I had the intercooler done I was recomended to use bigger bore Exhaust & if possible remove the cat (this i did as the original reg is 1971 and so i wasnt obliged to run it )
That made a hell of a difference the vehicle drove with the flexability & usability of a car. (perhaps there had been obstructions in the system but by its remover & in my case the introduction of just a one box system mad a big difference.
Dont know how you could get away with running catless on a p38 perhaps someonere here runs a pure off-roader catless

I had a DSE that went quite well when I bought it,I fitted a plug in chip and it went like HELL but smoked on kickdown. My guess is it was double chipped ie.it had been re-mapped before I bought it,therefore it was over-fueling,when I removed it from the vehicle the smoke went.

After a few days of monitoring it does not smoke on tickover ,my fault (****) but after cleaning the K&N filter and some Redex injector cleaner it seems to be alot better but I shall still be keeping a look out.
