Distributor Earth lead can I

I have a 3.5 efi I’ve bought a new distributor but it has the 3 pin amplifier as opposed to the original 2 pin amplifier, I know you can buy an extra lead but I’ve been told the extra lead is only for earth, the bought lead is £15 which I think is a rip off if it’s only for earth, can I make up my own lead for this.
