Discovery TDI, gears go up but not down

Hi, I got myself a 1993 TDI today and drove it 200miles home. Gears were working fine until the last 20 miles where I could change up but couldn't change down again. I could only put it into 5th gear from neutral... Please help!
If anyone has any ideas what might be wrong with it then I would be so extremely grateful!

Sorry don't know but mine will not go from 5th to 4th at all.

It could be the bias plate thats gone but not sure with that age of car some one else might know more. but if it is they is only cost a poorly fish

What's it like when the box is cold ?, changing the oil may help .

check the level when its cold idling and the level should drop. as for the black oil i had the same prob but never got to the bottom. i would change the oil and filters and check the transfer box at the same time.

Worth checking the gearbox oil level really rather than the engine oil level, i'd have thought.
