hi im on my 3rd fuel pump in the last 12 mnths the pump is fine when tank is full no whine at all as soon as it get to 1/4 of the tank it starts whining ? but then you fill it it stops i cant get to the bottom of it nor can my local landrover people sum one please help

Can only think of partially blocked pipe or trapped kinked somewhere. Full tank, fuel pressure helps the pump. low tank, no pressure pump working on it,s own. If theres a blockage it,s possible sruggling to push past it.:confused::confused:

TD5 pumps whine.

It's what they do.

Some women do it too.

PS I fitted a new pump to my TD5 today - 1 hour the whole job.

i know they whine but this one surges and cavitates bad only on 1/4 of a tank like theres air purging all the time it started only after changing the chaffed rear pipe that go to filter and pump one was leaking . so changed and then after a couple of weeks it all started the new well at the time pipes could be blocked a bit ???? i dont know but its had pipes from front to rear new

The noise sounds as if it may still be drawing in air somewhere, but as the fuel pipes are all under PRESSURE all the time, the source of air getting IN is a mystery. Usually in a TD5 it isn't AIR, but GAS from a cylinder getting into the fuel gallery because the copper washer under an injector is leaking a tiny bit.

If the engine is running well enough, don't do anything drastic or expensive. Bluff it out till you KNOW what the cause is. There may be nothing wrong with it!

It might be that you are too sensitive to the normal whiny pump noises.

I put a brand new OEM pump in mine yesterday, and guess what? IT WHINES!

its just had seals and washers done and the whining is loud really loud!! its a strange one no one knows how to solve it or what it is also headgasket just been done to wasent losing or using water just done it to see if it had any thing to do with it.. still the same put new pump in dident whine for a while and then out of the blue its back again but only at 1/4 a tank and it will cut out to as if its ran out of fuel also but theres fuel in her????

1. Are you SURE the fuel pipes are correctly connected onto the top of the pump? It is possible the car will run with some of the four pipes wrongly connected

2. Are you SURE the fuel filter isn't choked or water-logged? A stuffed filter causes the pump to make a lot of noise because it has to work hard to send fuel at 60 psi through the filter element. Unless You KNOW it isn't blocked (how could you tell?) fit a new one. Buy a box of half a dozen cheap ones, fit one, and carry the rest of them in the car.

You can check the filter quite easily.
1. unscrew it without tipping it over. Watch out for TWO sealing rings, a big one and a wee one. The wee one tends to get left on the filter head. TAKE IT OFF!

2. get a clean glas / plastic bowl and empty the filter into it. IT SHOULD BE CLEAN FUEL ONLY, no crap and no water.

3. wipe the top of the filter clean and using your mouth blow gently into the CENTRE hole of the filter. There should be practically NO resistance.
If there is resistance you need to blow firmly to overcome, fling the filter out and fit a new one.

4. grease the two sealing rings and carefully fill the replacement filter with clean diesel or kerosene, then screw it back up firmly, MAKING SURE THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE EACH SEALING RINGS, and not two little ones!

5. turn on the ign key and purge the fuel system.

Another idea you,re not getting a vacuum in you,re tank are you. undoe you,re filler cap see if pump goes quite.:confused:

Another idea you're not getting a vacuum in you're tank are you? Undo your filler cap see if pump goes quiet.:confused:

If it was tank vacuum it would usually happen more quickly with a FULL tank rather than an empty one, but it is well worth checking.

How would the fuel regulator cause these symptoms?
I'm about to change mine because the damned thing is leaking.
Blooming expensive item.

the only think i think it could be is the pipes that go to fuel pump and filter they were new but there might have been a blocked partley blocked pipe restricting the flow .. i dont know what to do but thats when it all started after changing the damn things

its not long had fuel reg as there was a leak. it has just had fuel filter fitted brand new it went for about 10mins so went for a spin and it died had to do the purge to get it going again and still whining. pipes are correct on top of pump white green blue black and no not getting vacuum in tank if i were to go and buy a new fuel pump it would go for maybe weeks or a month or two working great and then all of a sudden its back im just waisting money on it now and getting nowhere!!!!!

reason for fuel reg if its not holding it,s pressure then pump would struggle more with low tank to keep up fuel pressure:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:. reg already replaced so thats ruled out??.
next the vacuum worth a try cost nothing:rolleyes::rolleyes:

RIGHT!

It's a very good report you have given.

Those new pipes that were fitted ... were they pre-shaped or straight new pipes bent to fit?

If they were straight pipes bent to fit I think one (or more?) may have taken a KINK, and be damn-near blocked.

You might be able to see enough if you prop the car up on axle stands properly, take the rear right wheel off, and get your head in and a small bright torch.

The symptoms sound like it might be RESISTANCE to the flow of fuel making the pump work too hard, and a kinked or flattened plastic pipe could be the cause.

I had a noisy fuel pump on mine. Removed the pump and cleaned the filter it still whinned. fitted a ****part pump that soon went faulty. stripped my old pump and found another very fine filter inside the body. gave it a good clean was like a very fine carbon deposit. refitted 20,000 miles later still good. You havn.t got fine crap in you,re tank have you. take a sample in a clear plastic if it looks dark ther,s crap in it. Funny how it takes a while before fault re occurs. would sumise that the filter is possibly getting blocked slowly. Just another cost free check.:confused:

You have to remove the pump body (the white plastic casin) Its held on by plastic clips 3 ithink located around the top rim. be carefull their flimsy. Juggle the body off think you have to unclip the sender from body and feed the flexi fuel pipe through. Been a while since i done mine you will see a fine filter at the base good luck.
