Hi I am John from Warminster Wiltshire and as you can guess from the title i have a problem!! I am new to this site and not sure how things work. Does anyone know the size of the core plug that hides behind the starter motor and how easy it is for me to change the damn thing?

Item 37D2260L Core Plug Block on that page....

I've only changed them with the block out of the car, but it's reall straight forward... drain the coolant, tap one side of the plug in with a blunt tool, it will spin in the block, pull it out with pliers....

Use a socket that's slightly smaller than the new plug to drive it into the block - if it's too tight the plug will grip the socket as it goes in. Coat the plug edges with lock tight, make sure the plug sits a little deeper than the block face, it's the plug edges that bite into the block to stop it being forced out under pressure...

Are you sure that it's the plug leaking, just above that area are the heater matrix pipes, and/or the oil cooler coolant pipe depending on engine type (early 10p type or later 15p type)...

Thanks for your help. I am hoping that by dropping out the starter motor i will have enough room to do it in situ. I will update once it is done probably some time next week. I know the core plug definately has a leak on it but i will check the other bits at the same time because of late it seems as i plug one leak another pops up

Good luck! There's a plastic side panel behind the wheel arch which can be removed that might also give you some better access.

And don't forget axle stands/chocks/ tyre under the front of the car when doing this - suspecting you'll want the offside wheel off, so be safe!

2000 it should be early 10p type unless someone had transplanted a newer engine in...

You can tell by looking at the fuel pressure regulator, on early type it only has 2 hoses connected to it, newer ones has an addional hose which runs to the front of the block (later 15p has an external fuel return gallery).

So early and late type both have the 2 heater matrix hoses going into the bulkhead above the starter/side of cylinder head), early also has a hose coming from the rad to a metal pipe that runs around the back of the head. They did away with this on later types, no idea why - some earlier ones depending on which market they were sold into may also not have that hose/pipe assembly. Just worth checking these for leaks first, I'd expect these to go before a core plug.

This photo shows all the pipes....

2 hoses at left are to/from heater matrix.

Metal pipe running from bottom right around the back of the head is coolant to the oil cooler

The FPR can be seen, this is the early 10p type.

Thank you I will definately be back. i have learnt more in half hour than any book could have taught me!
Well it was definitely the core plug with approx a 3mm hole in it! I now have a new querie if I am not being too much of a pain. Do you know if the TD5 is fitted with any sort of a fuel syphon guard in the filler neck? I tried to put a hose down through to pull some fuel out and met with resistance and filling up is now a pain in the bum. If that is the case what can I do about it.
