I have a 96 3-door disco and was wondering if anyone has ever converted one to be soft top? Appreciate being told this is the stoopidist idea ever, but having a roofless disco in the summer would be so cool!!!

Is is possible?

:)

Other than the rear seat belts mounting points high up near the roof I cant see many problems with the actual removal of the roof and sides but should imagine making a frame and hood for it would be a bit of a bugger.

I did think about cutting the roof off my landy to make a convertable but I was thinking about how much flex you have to have and there is alot more to it than you think
My mate has cut roofs of cars and the amount of extra work and working out how much flex you have to have is a bitch, because if you make it too strong it will bend if you make it too weak it will fold up. so it is a case of working it all out and putting the strenth in the right places

Dont think body flex would be much of an issue as the chassis provides the rigidity to the car unlike say a ford fiesta which uses the body as a stressed member. Cut the roof of a fester without strengthening it will fold up under it's own wieght. If you search around on other threads on here there are a couple of disco pickup conversions and at least one trayback which is fundamently the same idea just without the worry of having to make a rag top up. Seat belt anchorages could be incorperated into the roll bars that would be adviseable.

This ones on ebay at the mo, to do a soft top you leave the back out of the cab and take a piece out of the front part of the remaining roof similar to a suzuki sj410 soft top or just have the rear part open like some tartlanders iirc.

HI Sleepwalker.
Did you ever cut the roof off? If so I would very much appreciate any and all advice, pics and inside knowledge. I am about to do the same to my 96, 3door Discovery.
My number is 07500 451 412 if you have a moment to talk.
Cheers
Paul
