Discovery s2 TD5 auto crap on diesel

My wifes TD5 auto is crap on diesel it only does about 100 miles to 30 quid of diesel is this right she only does short trips would i be better getting a V8 petrol it cant be any worse can it . any idea what it should do

How she drives it will make a difference, if shes slipping away at the clutch with lots of revs at every set of lights and putting the foot to the floor and reving it high before each gear change the consumption is obviously going to be bad... Or there is something not right...

This works out about 16mpg . My 4.0i V8 has done better.

To work out the fuel consumption you need to fill the car up, zero the trip meter and when you fill it up again note the amount in litres and the mileage covered.

Divide the amount of litres by 4.545 to get gallons then divide the gallons into the miles covered. If it still looks as bad as 16mpg you need the car looked at, although the types of roads covered and driving style should be taken into account.

is it in high ratio?

No idea where you're getting that from.

I've had a 52 plate ES auto for two months now, EGR removed a month ago and the best I've had is 25mpg [160 miles round trip].

Around town and to work and back I vary from 20-22mpg, i.e. short journeys [as the original poster outlined].
Will

Remove the EGR, this has to be done without fail, cap it off with a plate from ebay. Doing this will nearly double MPG. I had mine done, and average 30-35mpg depending how I am driving.

As for MOT inplications, mine just done and its emissions were 0.3 particles, pass limit is 1.9, so EGR is ok to blank off

Bloody hell, I'm made up with mine. £20 get's my auto TD5 110 miles, that's at £105.9 p/litre. EGR balnked off too

I have noticed that my Mrs also tends to rev the balls out of it in 1st gear

who dose diesel for 105.9???

My local Shell, Tesco and Asda do it for that price

It will be a miracle if she's slipping the clutch as she changes gears because it's an automatic.

shell is about the cheapest at 108.9
seen it at one of them local types at 111.9 last week
(didn't bother stopping at that one!)

Drove to Scotland and back this weekend, 2000 TD5 Auto, three people on board and the rest of the car filled to the roof with inflatable canoes and camping gear (entire boot and half of back seat folded). Also driving in high winds for most of the journey.

Got just ever so slightly under 25 MPG for the trip on average, following the fill-up to the brim again-test... The tank's range would cover approx 500 miles.

Full service being done next week including auto box oil and filter change so hope to see a couple of MPG improvement. (ERB blank fitted already - doesn't seem to make much difference on mine to be honest)

Have'nt got a disco but just curious what an EGR is?

Exhaust Gas Recirculation. basically it puts the exhaust gasses back thru the combustion cycle in order to burn off more pollutants and reduce emmissions.
