about a year ago (in cold / wet weather ) car unlocked as usual with remote keyfob but when ign turned on a chime sounded and the "M & S" light flashed, the dash did not display the gearselection ( its auto so should show "PRND321" as selected ) and car failed to start, further checks showed that I had also lost seat adjusters, windows, hazard and indicators, rear wiper and numerous various random circuits. I spent hours checking connection thinking that water had got in somewhere but failed to find a fault, in desparation it was towed to the local main agent who aslo could not trace the fault. Strangely after a few days it started and has been perfect ever since --- until last week when all the previous faults returned, plus some bizarre extra things happen - the intermittant front wiper relay clicks even with the ignition turned off, the rear washer works but not the wiper, sometimes the door locks and alarm work - but not always, sometimes the fault disapears and the car drives perfectly, once started it never goes wrong until its turned off, after which its pot luck if it will play up or not. Hopefully some other poor soul has had this problem and can shed some light on it before the rest of my hair is pulled out .. !!

Hi lester

You have got me worried since my own disco 2 es did the same thing a couple of weeks ago after a period of heavy rain.

two days later it started normally and the M & S lights had stopped flashing !!

I mentioned this to an 'expert' who said that this is a well known fault and something to do with one of the switches on the auto box . I have yet to check this out.....

A friend checked the OBDII codes and $18 was showing -- auto box so I guess this is where to start looking !!!

Hi I have got disco td5 gs auto I have had the none start and M&S gearbox lights flashed and all that,After alot of work I kept getting back to the starter motor ,so that got stripped down and all the solonoid internals cleaned up ,put it all back together and so far its all ok not had a fault again so far.So that could be something to look at with no real cost just time.

Hi
I have a disco TD5 ES Auto, I had same problem with M & S lights on.
Numerous trips to dealer, but problem not rectified.
talking to chap from LR assist about problem he knew all about problem.
Undone battery earth strap from bodywork, removed paint around bolt hole and re connected. problem solved. five minute job could save packet !

thanks for your suggestions - the auto gearbox switch is a common cause especially as the drain for the air conditioner is directly above the switch so it get water dripped onto it on a regular basis, but it doesnt usualy effect so many other circuits. I have not had the starter motor to bits but I have done just about every earth on the vehicle ( including up behind dash etc. ) - the internal fusebox has some ( intellegent ?? ) unit built into it so I have replaced that to no avail. The vehicle is now at the main dealer to have the BECM (body electrical control mudule ) replaced as it has to be reprogrammed after fitting - I shall let you know how we get on - thanks again -lester
