Having spent a couple of days in a newish Discovery 4 off road i wonder who was responsible for fitting it with a paddle gear change. Totally horrible for driving off road as you lose orientation as where the paddles are and which is down or up change. Fine for tarmac but off road, no thank you. Bring back the gear lever I say.

Or .... just leave it in auto ......

My Passat has paddles, used them once, kinda fun for 5 mins, now just drive it in auto. Paddles are kind of pointless as the box shifts up and down anyway, regardless of what you shift.

The reason for not leaving it in auto is in certain circumstances like going down steep off road hills you want maximum engine braking. This is achieved by HDC and the rotary dial in S which is command shift, this will lock you in first gear and much better to operate it with a lever than paddles that go round with the steering wheel. If they must have paddles why not put them on the column where they will in the same place all the time. TLC
