Discovery 4 EAS in 'Extended Mode'

2010 Discovery 4 is having an issue when trying to lower the suspension from any height, I get a message on the dash saying suspension is in 'Extended Mode' and immediately raises again. The message also says something along the lines of 'if clear of obstacle, confirm ride height', if i press the down button again, it will drop to the selected ride height. I checked my code scanner and saw code "C1A13 - Pressure does not decrease when venting gallery". Any ideas where/what to check first?

I don't want to confuse the issue but I believe this first occurred after lifting the car on my 2 post lift, allowing the wheels to hang. Could this have done anything?

Always worth checking all 4 height sensors are connected and not damaged?
Does your scanner allow you to see live values from the height sensors?

Always worth googling the code as there is loads of info out there, ie valve blocks x 3.
 
not uncommon for the system to block up on disco 3/4 with a white substance like which is the silicon in the air dryer on the condenser degrading which causes a white dust

I am experiencing that same problem! My 2012 Disco 4 stays up. If I manually lower it to street height it come back up to off-road stands. All works perfectly, but.....
Can I just clean out the lines or do I need to change valve blocks and compressor at 100k miles anyway? thanks for letting me know, I'd like to lay a little lower on the road.....

If it won’t lower that’s normally down to a bad height sensor or out of calibration , have u got ur own diagnostics please

would u mind measuring the heights from the centre of the wheels to the bottom of the wheel arch liners in MM please , we can then see how far out ur suspension is

plus when u drive over 30 Mph do u get any warnings plse come up on the dash board

hope that helps a little and we can guide u through it step by step, plus if u haven’t got any form of diagnostics can certainly recommend a few , there invaluable along with saving u a fortune in not having to go to a garage every time there’s an error
 
so my ride height is 45.7cm front and 48,2mm in the rear.
my terrain selector is street (round button) and the light is on the high setting on the manual up/down left button next to the round one.
I can force the car all the way down, then at 20-30mph it come up with a warning on the dash display.
I have a scanning tool (autoland scientech - scan IIwt) and no codes will show. I have read through all the valve settings and all the sensors read a normal height when its in access mode (0.05 every corner).
The car does not go higher if I turn the round button into off-road or rock crawl mode.
I just opened the compressor shell (AMK 2011) and it looks super clean, I hear the compressor running smooth and at the end of the cycle there is a puff from the release valve! the car does not sag over night or days, so its kind of a mystery to me. thanks

thks for the response, apologises for all the questions but may i check a few things plse

1) was there any error on ur suspension before lifting the disco
2)Before u lifted it what height was ur suspension set to
3) will ur code reader do suspension recalibration if so have u tried doing any adjustments
4) In the picture what setting have u got ur dial set to
5) when adjusting ur suspension heights , as in, access - normal , off road height , does the landy change heights and stop in each height setting or regardless always go into either , off road height , extended or super extended please

just trying to establish a few things and once again apologises for asking

alas not familiar with ur code reader , hopefully can establish what’s going on

this is exactly the configuration I have in my car pictured!!!!!
1) not that I'm aware of
2) pretty sure street level
3) not 2 days ago (I took my Landy out for a few trans hoping it would through a code and I will check again tomorrow)
4) identical to the picture you posted! If I put it in access mode it will raise at 25mph into the height I mention in prior post (seams high)!!!
5) so I tried to get it into superior mode today by locking transfer and low gear, using rack crawl mode, it lifted to front 50.8cm back 53.3cm.
after that I unlocked transfer and switched to Hi, but would still hang up there in street mode until I forced it into access mode when then it got back up to the 47/48 setting at 25mph.

Please don’t think I’m trying to teach u how to suck eggs,

ref suspension heights , ur have access which is normally used to make life easier getting shopping , or getting in and out, or lock it into access mode for low car parks

normal ride height then off road height , extended or super extended are controlled by the ecu and only happen if u bottom out on something or physically put an obstruction underneath then lower it on that so the computer then asks if u wish to raise it, then after will ask have u cleared the obstruction and will normally lower if all is ok

so indeed for around town etc ur be in normal ride height as per ur settings which went far off, plus or minus 10mm is ok

just abit confused why ur changing the terrain response and CDL to try and change the suspension into extended mode

Alas know these vehicles can be frustrating at times and very complicated

if ur scanner can do suspension calibration and live data it should show u what the voltages are to each height sensor in each of the 3 x switch controlled ride heights , along with Ian and gallery PSi settings

I am well aware that the Air Suspension can be tricky, luckily I am quite handy (as a classic car restoration mechanic and body man)
The Discovery was a long time dream and I am willing to put in the work!
The compressor and its components are all original still after 10 years and 103k miles, thats a sign of how great these vehicles are if treated right! I will however start to rebuild and exchange delicate parts like and attack the rebuild of the engine timing chain for the 5.0 V8 and its cooling system.

no probs and a lot more has clicked into place thks to ur replies

let me dig out a few manuals I’ve got and see if we can come up with a plan of action for u , if in the mean time if u can try and find what the maximum pressure ur air compressor runs at please, then watch the live data as after it vents it should drop to the gallery reserve pressure , found the pressure chart as well for u , so in other words ur have ur main pressure when the engine is running, then once it reaches a set level, it will vent and just keep a reserve amount of air in the gallery

that’s great ur handy as can help all I can, alas also had the pleasure of totally rebuilding my suspension, so fingers crossed can guide u step by step

Really hope none of what I’ve said so far has come across as disrespectful in any way

so please leave it with me and can then find those manuals and write a list ur for u so we can then go back and forth testing As we go

ur so very welcome and pleasure to help where I can

so finally managed to look for the height sensor data which should be very similar if not her same on ur D4, mines a D3

I’ve got a few suspicions, ie, exhaust valve isn’t opening properly to allow the air to release when commanded , or the dryer materiel and filters inside are blocked also leading to where air can’t get out

plus 1 ref JLR dealers , also don’t let mine anywhere near one, personally I use a Code reader from Gap called an iid , they come from Canada , alas expensive but pay for them selves very quickly and will do virtually everything , another one is called an Autel AP200 , white version, cheap , but handy to keep on ur glove box,

so when u get chance if u would be so kind to check the main and gallery pressure , also a good indication is looking at the compressors motor temperature , u should also be able to watch the exhaust valve open set in %

if ur AMK is that old it’s a good chance it will req a rebuild , or if to far gone a new one, but can cross that bridge after looking at the live data

Hope this helps by giving u something to start with , in seeing what the live data is, normally if there was a height sensor error a fault code would come up , can sometimes be a multitude of things, from wiring connectors etc etc , but no point going down that route unless data points us that way

think ur around 12 x hours behind us, lol

have a good one , plus don’t mind admitting very jealous u have the 5 x litre, still gas prices here are around $11.00 bucks per uk gallons, ie 4.5 litres

Oh my word!
Good news! I finally have a FAULT CODE!!!! ;-/
C1A69, C1A69, C1A70 and C1A71, all for corner of Height Sensor Supply!
Reading through the 15 pages live data all seams normal and logical but:
left front sensor V 1.65
right front sensor V 3.25
left rear sensor V 3.30
right rear sensor V 1.53
Compressor temperatur 48 (assuming 48 celsius wich is ok?)

I have to say I read this live data while not standing quite level, driveway lowered to the right both front and back, the data showing off in the vehicle is diagonal!!!! off front left and rear right! so that can not be a driveway cause!

wanna mention that I did disconnect all the height sensor plugs and cleaned them out, lubed them before plugging together (all 4 corners) the other day when I had the Landy on the lift!
It did however not change the behavior and I had suspected bad contact at the level sensors right away after determining that the compressor was pumping and the exhaust valve was somewhat working (not sure how it should sound but it puffs at compressor shutoff!)
Now I am not trying to jump to conclusions quite yet, just a general question here:
My AMK compressor has a 06.08.2011 date on it, I think it time!.... they are under 200$ here on US eBay!
I am thinking the valve blocks would be a good idea to be changed or rebuild as well (almost not worth it, one of the 3 is $48 ea)?
What about the air lines? can they be blown out or need replacing?
Obviously the bags will have to get done soon as well, but until they leak....???? or will they contaminate the new parts with the dirt they piled up in them for the last 10 years???
Anyhow, I will have to buy my own reader, and I think the iiD tool is probably the way to go!
I love the 5.0 V8, it's terrible on gas milage, but not much worse then my 2017 Jeep Wrangler with a 3.6 V6, so what the hell?????!
 
Many thks for the details , alas as u unplugged all of them and allowed the suspension to hang on the lift it’s more than likely ur suspension will require re calibration

However for some strange reason it doesn’t always happen , but does make more sense of them being unplugged

when I’ve raised mine on a jack I’ve always put the suspension into off road height, then removed fuse F26 from the engine bays fuse box

Amk has done very well , hope I don’t mind me saying but that does sound cheap, make sure the online shop doesn’t say amk type as there a cheap chines copy

u can also check the performance of ur compressor , will get 2 x readings , first when it’s running and then after it stops and vents

plus 1 ref the gap iid m fantastic bit of kit plus there after sales service is second to none , the other one, ref Autel AP200 , white , is also really handy for ur glove box, use mine via my iPad

U can get rebuild kits for the amk and valve blocks , when I first got mine I disconnected all the air lines, marking them to ensure they went in the right places , blew out all the air lines, then fitted new compressor , 3 x valve blocks , air tank, plus the 2 x front leaking air struts, this was mainly because the dryer material had turned to dust and went round the entire system

so as you’ve written the codes down, clear all the codes, then re calibrate suspension

almost forgot , when u raise or lower ur suspension does the orange suspension light on the up/ down button in the centre console flash then stay steady when it’s ready that’s selected height plse , thks

first this week I will change the transmission pan to a metal one with separate filter and do all the oil service in axles, engine and new spark plugs.
here in the USA only the bare minimum is done and everybody tries to cut corners, so I'm gonna do it right and do it all!
car has 103k miles now and deserves a lot of attention for the next 100k!

that’s great u followed the process as indeed lift it to off road height then pull the fuse then raise it , also seen where u lock it into access height , then seen ones where nothing was done and just lifted and was fine

makes u want to bang ur head against the wall sometimes, lol

indeed there knock offs, see if they say AMK style plse
