Discovery 2003 TD5 Clunk

Hi there!

Recently purchased a new to me Discovery TD5 with 113k miles on it. I never noticed it the first few miles but heard a loud clunk when in a narrow street when I let off accelerator and put it back on. Now I've noticed it, I can't stop hearing it and wondering if any of yous have an idea of what it could be?

A few mechanic friends have said it could be prop shafts - checked and they are all solid with no play.
Rear diff bearings allowing internal play of some sort?
Possibly worn splines from gearbox to transfer box.



Any ideas or help on how to check if it could be any of the above or have any of you experienced the same issue?

Sounds like transfer box my 300tdi used to do it with diff lock on transfer box in that was knackered

I hope its that as I have a replacement transfer box to go in with a diff lock which I'm currently making an air shifter for I guess I'll see when I strip it down to change it! Thanks for the reply.

That's good you got a spare then I could be wrong but that's what it sounds like , air shifter eh like it ☺

Hope it turns out to be that. Aye it seems to work well in prototype form, waiting for the Mrs dad to come back so he can machine me up the parts in final form!
