Hi All
New here and picking up a D2 TD5 tomorrow.

I have always valued the opinions and help from the hivemind of forums, so im hoping as this journey unfolds there will be similar here.

Not yet got the disco in my ownership but already bought a few bits to get the project rolling including:
- Suspension Coil Compressor to get the lift kit back on
- replacement centre dash fascia to play around with creating a double DIN head unit space
- Replacement front grille to return to more original and understated looks

Will be trying myself to comprehensively work over/through the car once i receive it to be sure its in the condition i want/need to be reliable and safe.

Also got a long list of ideas in my head as to what i want to do with it....

I'll be posting plenty of pictures along the way, and likely asking a hell of a lot of questions and using the many threads ive already been pawing over to provide inspitation and how-to's

Overall excited to get my hands on another Land Rover and another Discovery again.

Drove the 60 miles back home effortlessly, although there was a bit of an oily smell when i checked under the bonnet when i got home and what looks like some fluid here (noob help here: please someone tell me what im looking at here as my googling is yet to find the answer...)

Definitely looks like oil to touch - is this usual? Is it critical? Can i stop it/fix it? Should i bother?
 
It's oil, looks like maybe rocker gasket is weeping too. There is a valve (black plastic) on that pipe that could probably do with replacing, on td5's you have to change the loom running to the injectors every 30k, this is located under the rocker cover and is a very simple job, so when you get a new gasket also get a new injector loom and do both at the same time!

Those type of hose clamps are rubbish, they are quick and easy for factory assembly, but as I replace pipes, for coolant or induction I try and replace those with a stainless screw clamp, better seal! :)

Thank you both for the help - I’ve been looking at replacing all hoses with silicon and will use proper screw tight hose clamps.

there’s an upgraded CR Hybrid turbo on here which looks to have stock hoses running to it also, so they’ll be getting an upgrade too.
 
In other non-enginespillingoil related news

Ordered a set of 5 Modular Steel 16 x 8 wheels to swap the tyres on to and widen the stance a little thanks to their offset.

Looks like I’m going to need a couple of trolley jacks etc for ongoing work - any reccomendations?

Ive ordered the wheelnuts for the steel wheels, however, where / can i find locking wheelnuts for Discovery 2 Steel wheels?!
Searched for hours and hours tonight and come across quite a few forum posts across the web asking the same question - with no definitive answer?!

Do they exist?

Help!
 
Day 1 of discovery 2 ownership:
  • 50 miles of mainly motorway driving and the car seems to drive well (my only experience for comparison is discovery 1). Awful wind noise from light bar - going to be removed.
  • Oil weep around rocker cover noticed
  • More voluminous oil leak coming from breather hose
  • Modular Steel Wheels ordered
  • New hoses for breather and turbo ordered
  • 2 DIN cage on the way to guide dash remodel
  • New rocker cover gasket and injector loom ordered
Day 2 of discovery 2 ownership
  • All additional front spots / lights / light bar and wiring removed
  • Bonnet bra removed
  • New front grille replacing old one which had been drilled and had lights fitted to it
  • Standard hose clamp removed from rocker cover end of breather hose and replaced with a jubilee hose clip
Much happier with how the car now looks (and no awful wind noise from light bar)

Very excited to get hold of the steel modular wheels (hopefully beginning of the coming week) to stance out a little wider, and book the car in to get the Terrafirma 2” lift kit put back on and the rims changed over.
 
Nice, what tyre size do you have on? The rocker gasket is an easy change but take your time to check the rear is seated properly. Also, would advise while its off to change the rear cam seal. Its just a plastic bung but a common cause of oil leaks down the back of the block

honestly I can’t tell you how helpful little tips like this are - there is in fact oil down the back of the block aswell that I thought may well have also been from the rocker cover gasket. Will add that on the to-do list.

tyres are 265/75/16R
 
So.....
Just went to take a look at a few bits im going to do some work on over the next week or so (once bits arrive) and noticed some oil on the floor under the car - only a small ammount, so initially wasnt worried, thougth id still inspect though, as id rather no oil.....

After further reading these are Wading plugs that are supposed to be removed regularly to prevent moisture / other build up in the clutch / bell housing - anooying its not there at all though. Time to seek a replacement

Annoyingly now more worried about all the oil underneath the car.....
 
Is the oil coming out of that hole? I believe in the manual it does say something along the lines of it should be removed to allow oil to drain or something like that. My understanding is they should be left out unless wading but may be wrong there.

I’m not sure if anyone here has a 200tdi, 300tdi or TD5 that doesn’t leak at all. Both my D1 and D2 marked their territory.
