Right..... changed the air suspension, level sensors and a door lock this weekend followed by the resealing of the sunroofs / dropped and refitted headlining on Monday. All seemed OK but obviously the doors were left open most of the two days. The vehicle wasn't started albeit to test the air suspension job integrity on Saturday, then switched off. Went to start it Monday night - dead. Dash lamps work / go off as normal just a click from the starter. Radio not lit and clock fades out as key is turned to start position.... although the lights and sunroof motors work. Almost as if it was immobilised.
Put a booster charger on the battery this morning and it was quite low (10A+ showing on the meter) so left it a few minutes to charge. After a few minutes a vibrating noise pulses starts (like an ABS pump, but not) from down in the engine bay. Didn't like the sound of that so disconnected the charger and panicked that I've fried something. Still didn't start. I had an issue with a key recognition induction coil on another car so searched out the spare key; took about 20mins. Put the key in and it started perfectly. So tried the original key.... perfect start. Ran the engine for 5 minutes and all seemed fine. Took it for a test round the block, stopped the engine then dead again - both keys.:confused::mad:

Methinks battery is goosed.... but what are the risks in battery change on this vehicle and can I boost start it - what was the component that made the noise when I did? Can I remove the old battery and charge it overnight without the electronics failing? What battery to fit (spec) and what precautions to take....... any help please!!

Thanks in advance,

Steve.

you can boost start ,swap battery etc ,my own battery did similar would charge but not hold it for long a new battery cured it, though it took 4 they sent 3 dead batteries before getting a decent oneeach one flat if left overnight

Thanks for that, James! Am I on the right track with the battery failing? I have read several stories of alarms going off when the battery is disconnected (my ex police Disco 1 did this - scared the s*it out of me at 11pm at night.) And tales of electronics/ key fobs failing to work again...... !
Came back this evening (car sat in the drive for 3 hours) and it started first time! Also is there a common fuse for the interior lights as none are working and I have tested the bulbs (OK) and each unit for 12V supply - nothing. I assume there is a dimmer timer that shuts off the interior lamps when you lock the vehicle. Could the door being opened so long have cooked this control unit? Can't find a fuse for these lights in either fusebox.......

ive had lots of problems with batteries failing after been flat for a few days ,and very few once new fitted and back up and running ie vehicle with fully charged battery at all times

I often have situations were my batteries run flat (two flat his week). I would check the electrolyte levels and if low top up with distilled water to the indicator mark before charging. I had a dead battery I'm my x type and it was goosed according to the aa. I topped it up with distilled water and a little Epson salts and it just runs a dream now. It holds a good charge even with lights on and engine off. Hope that helps.
