Dear All - Any help would be appreciated, my Discovery Series 2 (1999 V8) has developed a strange groaning sound really noticable between 50 - 60 mph - it can only be descriped as a sick cow or touching the rumble strips on the motorway. I have checked to date the following:

1) Propshaft UJ's front & back - plus rear diff coupling (no play at all)
2) Checked rear diff oil level and quality (no probs there)
3) Checked Auto Box Oil Level (Running) seems ok (slight top up 1/4 litre)
4) Wheels - Rears re balanced (no problem there)
5) Shake / Movement Check - MOT style on wheel bearings (seem ok)

Getting frustrated as it sounds like the transmission as about to fall out but only at certain speeds - around town below 40mph she's faultless.

Any suggestions welcome - thanks guys / girls

hi we had a strange noise coming from transmission area on our td5 after lots of head scratching it turned out to be the button on the end of the hand brake vibrating at different speeds good luck

Hi,
I had that sort of noise on my disco and it turned out to be the fixing bolt for the front wing near the bumper fixing bolt at the bottom of the front wheel arche,it had corroded through and the wing was vibrating at certain revs.hope this helps

hi rooster have you had any joy with you disco? I have the same problem but at a lower speed, it starts around 40 and and then you can drive throudh it and stops around about 50 ish. tried most of the things you have but no joy!
I really do have sympathy for you mate because its driving me mad, and i really have run out of ideas what it could be?
i did think it was a problem with the gearbox or diff but they have been changed recently and the noise is still there?
I did have a thought that it might be the flywheel that is out of balance?
my mate had a very similar problem with his mx5 and that is what was causing it.
but any ideas would be awesome before i go the garage for a gallon of petrol!!
many thanks lee.

Hi
I think we got some crossed wires here I had the same noise as you discribed and it turned out to be the bolt that hold the front wing on down by the front bumper fixing.the wing had corroded and the bolt had pulle through and at certain speeds it was vibrating and driving me mad.hope this is of some help as I cured mine by putting a new bolt in with a large washer it is now like a rolls royce nearly
regard Peter
