Hi everyone,

Some advice please.Im new to Land Rover but have always fancied a discovery. The older shape discoverys are now good value second hand.Im going to look at one this weekend which is the last of the old shape 2003 model auto Td5 GS - its done 60k and the chap wants £11k ono.

Can you tell me what to look out for as i have read some horror stories here about reliability etc.

And can anyone recommend some decent land rover specialists in the West Mids area.

Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't expect to see a lot of wear at this age/milage. The paint should all be sound and chip free, the chassis will have bits of corrosion on the welds (unless it's been waxoyled...if it hasn't been waxoyled and you intend keeping it for a few years then waxoyl will pay for itself in bills later). On mine the original tyres went to almost 70k miles, so I guess this one will have well-worn tyres, or recent new ones. The rest of the package is really luck-of-the draw. I had my TD5 from new in 2002, and it remained defect-free until 92k when several things all happened at once (3 small oil leaks, failed starter motor, front wheel bearings, and ABS sensor, and an ACE sensor...£1000 in all!). Been fine since, now at 110k miles and still fine. If it looks well looked after by an enthusiastic owner who hasn't skimped on maintenance, it should be just run in!
