Possibly for connecting steering wheel controls at a guess?
Need closer pic of writing on the box or as Brian said where the wires were going.

Was located on bulkhead no idea on wires writing on box cant be read
Well this here is an Alpine interface controller for another vehicle, and that would be my guess.
Each cars steering wheel controls send different frequencies etc so a conversion box is needed for the new radio to understand what signal is being recieved, e.g volume up/down.

Just a case of, since the radio wasn't specifically designed for the discovery 2, it does not understand the signal received from the steering wheel volume and track controls, so the box is needed to "convert" the signal to one the radio understands.

I don't know about it being for the remote steering wheel controls, for instance the Alpine R990 head unit is directly wired to those controls.
It's my guess that it's more likely to be one of the aerial amplifiers, but without more information we're all just guessing.

It was fitted to enable the steering wheel controls to work with the Alpine headunit.

The previous radio supplier couldn’t supply so alpine was used and the interface box added as a quick stop gap
