Disco wheels on a fender

I'm scrapping my disco an I've offered my dad my mud tyres as he has AT. I tried one wheel on there but there was no thread showing through the nut, almost like the nut was only half on. Is this ok or should he get these tires put on his rims?
 
If they're alloys, you will probably need the nuts to match... I fitted Disco 1 steel wheels with my standard nuts no probs - but they did thread all the way through the nut.
 
It's steel wheels coming off and steels disco wheels going on. I tried it with the same nuts that came off but still had no thread coming through the nut :confused:
