hi any body help
do you use sealant on the vally gasket before bolting it up.
on the rav cd it says put sealant on the notches.
havany got a glue what they are talking about.

many thanks for all your help

Hi Guinness i have always used sealant around the water jacket areas and under the two end seals that go over the end of the block. They have a tab thing on each end probably what the rave cd is talking about.Hope this helps.

The sealant is for the ends of the two rubber gaskets that sit under the valley gasket and have the two steel clamp pieces on top of the valley gasket with a single bolt fixing (Which you must not overtighten)

The LR sealant is a black RTV type of silicon sealer, but we have used Hylomar on our rebuild. The reason for the sealer is that the area where the ends of the rubber gasket fit are variable in size and shape, according to tolerances on the manifold, head alignment etc etc.

Anyone know what torque these bolts need to be? Can't find it in the RAVE CD.

Cheers,
Roger

Ive just done this job about a week ago. i used loctight blue sealant and i put it around all the water and air inlets as you dont want either a water or air leak. as for the 2 rubber gaskets make sure there super clean and is good shape and is you look at the ends of the gaskts you will see a little lip of rubber this fits into little grooves in the engine. make sure that thes parts of the gasket are inserted properly as they have a habbet of poping out when fitting the plate over the top of them. Also make sure the 2 plates are not bent and are clean.

as for torque settings in the Land Rover Book its says :

Inlet bolts to 47-54Nm
clamp plate bolts 13.5-20Nm
Rocker covers to 7 Nm
make sure you tighten the inlet bolts equal and oppisite to each other

Just double-check those figures, the inlet manifold tightening is a two-stage process.
