Hi folks

Some of you may have seen my previous thread about my tanny box (haven't fixed it yet as my starter motor's gone and I can't road test it), but I was just thinking about putting a Disco one in as I've heard they give better MPG?:D Always good! Can anyone tell me if it affects anything else like the low box "grunt" or it's off road ability? Does it make it any quicker on the road as well?

Opinions would be mucho apreciated
Cheers

Aerodynamics are the real limiting factor on road for speed and economy not the gearing... more comfortble cruising perhaps with a disco box as it'll rev lower for the same road speed, but no more economy unless you stick to the same speeds you were driving at before.

The low range is the same for a disco box as a defender one - provided you always use low range off road then it will be exactly the same as it ever was.

Cheers Adz and cheers for another healpful link sean, judging by "the forum of which we don't speak" I'll leave it as it is, cause I will be putting some shag-nasty 33-35 tyres on it at some point :D

Thanks again

Mornin SPT

I have a Hybrid Series on a RR chasis running a 300tdi motor & disco main & transfer boxes sitting on 265/75/16`s

Regarding the transfer box - It really depends what you are going to use the vehicle for (but remember you have five gears & no rush to work your way up through them in any hurry)
I have the disco T/box on and i find it fine - just means i just change up later through the box - when you slip it into 5th the engine is tumbling along at about 2000RPM doing about 60-65 mph and thus really can only speak highly of the change.
One proviso: is that mine had a full fern intercooler job done and so there is the ummmph if needed.
One other thing, if you do source a disco T/box - ensure that that it either is a later box with better mainshaft lubrication - what i did as a double insurance was to install one of parker`s splash plates on the rear of the box about 20 quid / 6-8 little bolts and about 30mins work (less if done before instalation on the vehicle) - that way you ensure the main shaft will stay slippery.

all in all go for it - if youre not happy - you can always put the defender T/box back on!

Happy trails

Hi Abe
thanks for the info....I think I'm gona leave it as it is, if it was a 200/300tdi then i'd probably do it, but mines got a 2.8TD Isuzu lump in it (so much power!!!:D :D) and the turbo is up the revs a bit so can take a bit of getting going on the road (phenomenal off road tho, specially in low box) and I can see me being out of the turbo all the time if I put a disco tanny box in....or have I got that the wrong way round?

therectically there should be about a 13% reduction in engine revs gained by fitted the 1.222222 disco box - i'd read lots about 200tdi s from a disco going into a 110 will result in a engine that revs its nutts off, only gets to 60-65 but which will pull a house down in the low gears

i've had my 110 back now for about a week after having a disco 200tdi put in it and it sits happily at 75-80 (with more to come) and doesnt sounds overly revvy at those speeds.

now i am wondering if it's poiible to tell which tranny box is fitted and if changing to the disco box would drop the revs too low such that id be dropping gears on inclines - maybe on the basis that it isnt broke i wont fix it

Hiya SPT

regarding the picture...
Certainly is

i just use it at the weekend just to do chores or for a little joy-riding on a sunday

its had a 3 inch lift and up rated shocks & springs - all the breathers axles boxes bellhousing & timing case have been raised
The main air intake which is a cone K&N is on the driverside wingtop behind a air scoop
The oil filter is via a Kleenoil system and the intercooler is a fern one
the loom is the original (been by-passed where and when needed)
Interia dash is full defender as is the heating system
it runs twin tanks controled via a pump solanoid switch from a Jag (better than the orig military spec fit) fuel delivery is all electric supplied via a range - rover facet pump (the pump is over-speced & pump circulates un used warm diesel back to the main tank - handy in the winter.)
Additional winter diesel warming is also achived by a diesel return pipe running via a solanoid switch through a heating coil on the exaust manafold and then back to the main tank.
(The aim over all is to get a good combination of warm diesel & cold air)
Runs on local german comercially available Bio Diesel)
Exhaust system is a non cat straight-thru with single defender middlebox & rear entry just slightly left of the rear tow hook (advantage - its straight with next to no bends and avoids most of the road spray)
I run it on old-timer plates as its original reg date was 1971 (re-registered on import into Belgium)
Final project to do (when i get the final parts & time to do it) is a remote oil cooler for the R380 main box

happy trails

Abe
