Hi!
I recently took my 1997 Disco Tdi for a service and to check on oil leaking
from the transfer box. The workshop said the leak was due to wear on the
transfer box _casing_ and they would have to replace it. Needless to say,
this cost me quite a bit. Now, my knowledge is limited, but a few questions
spring to mind. How can normal wear cause a transfer box to leak? I
thought all moving parts would be on bearings. I'm also under the
impression that all the oil seals move against the input/output shafts and
are stationary against the transfer box casing. Can anybody enlighten me as
to how typical wear would happen on a transfer box casing and how it would
cause oil leaks? Did they take me for a ride?
To make things interesting, a couple of days after receiving the vehicle
back, I noticed there's still oil dripping from the transfer box. I took
the disco back to the workshop and they said they will investigate. Now
they tell me they discovered a leaking oil pump. They also said this
particular pump is a sealed unit and they would have to replace it.
Hmmm...I went through Hayne's Disco Workshop manual and some Defender Tdi
workshop manuals (I reckon they're pretty similar re. stuff like engines,
gearboxes, transfer boxes), but couldn't find any other oil pump but the
engine's oil pump situated inside the timing belt housing. Am I missing
something?
Any help appreciated
