I have been thinking about what to do with my 5 door disco 1 which i have sitting on the drive. I rebuilt the engine a while back but i have not refitted it due to a house move, finding the inner wings really need replacing and it could really do with the gearbox or transfer box looking at as it was noisy. Anyhow i have been also thinking about turning it into a long term project rebuild and turn it into a pickup. So im after ideas on what to do. I would like it to look sort of factory like, not just a chopped up disco. Ideas so far are:-

1. Use 3 door rear quarters and chop them down and make good.
2. Use the rear tub off a defender and make a proper cab.
3. Use a shortened rear tub off a Hi-Cap and make a proper cab.

At the moment im leaning towards option 3 as i like the idea of using landrover parts and the hi-cap tub sides would match the doors and front wings of the disco better than a standard defender tub.

I have seen the longranger kits but i dont really want any glassfibre on it and they are a bit expensive. This is going to have to be done on a limited budget, but my fabrication skills are pretty good and my time is free.

So what do you good people think, and if you where going to do something like this, what would you do?

Does anybody know what the width of a hi-cap tub actually is? I believe they are a couple of inches wider than a 110 tub which is 63" wide. The disco rear is 67" wide i think from my dodgy measurements in the dark so i would possibly need to widen the tub by a couple of inches to make things look right. I will get some better measurements tomorrow from the disco.

I was also thinking that with some cutting and chopping of the roof section i could produce a cab using the windows and possibly some panels from a defender truck cab. Still a bit pie in the sky but it is looking more do able, i think.

I saw 1 on the isle of wight the other week, looked really good chopped back, something different

Thats what i was hoping for, a different looking disco that i have built myself. I have been giving the disco a good staring at out the window wondering how i would like it to look and a thought just struck me. Is the roof bolted and bonded to the car or is it welded in??

good luck im transforming a 3dr disco 200 into a bobtail pickup but im just going down the route of making my own tub and cab out of the normal landy
