Hi all,

Anyone had one of these, seen one, used one, knows what they're like, how
hard to fit?

We seriously need a new bumper and after the last excursion decided we'd
also like to slightly improve the off-road ability at the front. Hopefully
this will do that, and will certainly mean we won't lose any more end-caps
.... ;) We like the look of this, though the number plate looks a tad
vulnerable, so any observations welcome, even though we've already bought
it. ;)

If the plate is vulnerable when mounted as in picture 1, I would think you're
probably up the proverbial and a lost cause.

Isn't that what a recovery shackle is for ?

On the back in this case, the shackles on that bumper are lower than the
number plate...

Paul,

If you want to preserve the looks - don't get one of these - they look $%^&
awful from the side..... just sharp metal and bolt holes in the wing as you
now have no wrap around endcap....

We thought of that, looks aren't important to us, but safety will be. We
have some Semi-rigid (oo-er missus) crash helmet plastic trim to put on,
glue on maybe, all sharp bodywork edges.

At the moment the o/s front endcap is hanging off, with the mounting plate
snapped. The n/s one isn't too bad looking but also has the mounting plate
broken. So with the rust on the main bumper and a split in the lower bumper
plastic trim, we figured it's time for a complete replacement bumper,
that'll also not get knocked about when we do, which we do regularly, go
off-road.

The hi-lift and recovery points will also be useful (again) at some point in
future, I can foretell these things ... ;)

The BRB bumper is ok and they come up on ebay a lot - strong, has the
recovery points etc....and space for a winch if you ever need it. Also Devon
4x4 do a very nice HD bumper (that wraps around) etc etc....

I am really not sure about tubular on Discovery...

Problem is with all the square (normal looking ish) bumpers is (mainly) the
price ... BRB is £269 + vat + delivery. The one on ebay is £145 inc
delivery etc. We've looked at many tens of bumper manufacturers and this
particular one looks well-built, cheap and out of the way enough not to get
us stuck, whilst still looking like it's man enough not to be too bent if we
do get it stuck, which I'm sure we might anyway.

We ummed and ahhed a bit, but price for price we'll chance it, we reckon.
Certainly, though, the Disco has more rounded bits on it than a Defender and
the Defender round bumpers don't look too out of place.

Other thing was availability .. with the bits hanging off ours and an MOT
due next month we wanted something now. ;)

I was more hoping for views of people who might have one fitted, how it
performs, any problems fitting it etc.

There are circumstances in which wrap rounds are a distinct
disadvantage. Make sure that you really want such a feature before you
jump that way.

Someone on mud-club bought one, fitted it, though "oh my god what is that!",
removed it and sold it......that a good enough review :(

Good bits ... Good ebayer, good communication, delivery as pronised so
positive feedback left and positive feedback received. Though when you pay
by return they can't do much else I guess. The bumper itself is pretty much
what we expected ... fitted easier than removal of old bumper, and it
certainly looks like it's well out of the way. Beefier than I thought it
would be with extra gussets and bracing where it looks like it'll help.
Ends chamfered over and capped off properly and the main tube is contoured
to fit the Disco front end quite nicely. The bash plate, small as it is,
looks pretty substantial as do the eyelet holes/recovery positions and
jacking points. For a cheap bumper I'm reasonably impressed.

Bad bits ...Paint is a bit crap, indeed matt black on red oxide primer, as
can easily be seen on one of the photo's where I peeled off the sticker ...
If a sticker glue pulls the paint off, what's mud and a jet wash gonna do?
I guess I'll smooth hammerite it ... eventually ;) As thought, there's
nowhere to properly mount the number plate out of the way, so I self-tapped
it into the front plastic grille. A more permanent fix will be fixed when I
get another tuit or three

Overall, for the price, I'd so far recommend them. We'll have to wait a
couple of weekends to see how it fares 'in battle', the green-laning we're
doing this week is pretty tame and sedate. ;)

Having just got back from a days off-roading, green-laning and a bit of
playing in a quarry I can also add the following.

Having a higher bumper just seems to make the steering stuff a tad more
vulnerable, so I'll need a steering guard, pretty quickly I reckon and maybe
a diffguard too, as I'm sure I hit at least one rock ....

So, what say the group, budget under a ton, steering guard required for 300
Tdi Disco, doesn't need jacking, towing or recovery points as the bumper
already has them. I'll be fitting it at home with a meccano style toolkit
and an 'ammer ... ;)

Ease of fitment and fitness for purpose much more important than style or
gimmicks. It will probably be painted Hammerite smooth black, or even
Hammerite hammered green, depends what's left in each tin after we've done
the railings ... ;)

Recommendations please.
