just looking through the paperwork for the disco i have just got and noticed
that it had the belt changed 12000 miles ago but the garage have stated on
the paperwork that it needs a kit one mod, it actually had a kit two mod
when the new belt was fitted. next question as it has not had the full mod
how will this effect the lifespan of the belt? how much is the kit one mod?

There are three possibilities for the 300Tdi Discovery - Option Kit 1,
Option Kit 2 and none required.

Option Kit 1 comes with a nice pile of bits including a new timing case.
Option Kit 2 comes without the timing case and a few less bits.

STC4095K 300 Tdi Option Kit 1 £217.49 inc VAT
STC4096K 300 Tdi Option Kit 2 £73.00 inc VAT

If it has had a kit fitted, if it needed one, then there is no need
to do it again! It needed one or the other, or none, they are not
an upgrade path.

what i am wondering is if the previous owner had kit two fitted to save
money, the reason i say that is because the garage put on the receipt that
there is no warrantee on the cam belt because kit 1 was not fitted. the car
is a 1995 300 tdi. if it needed kit 1 would fitting kit two make no
difference at all? how can i find out what kit should be fitted?

the best indication is the state of the belt, I reckon. Not all of them
wear, not all wear to the same extent, is my take on it from the various
comments. I'm fairly sure ours hasn't had any kit fitted, or if it has,
they didn't do the required paint marking, yet the belt (when I changed it
'cos I was changing the head) showed minimal wear in a fair mileage (about
24K ISTR) since we'd had it. The belt was changed not that long before we
got it.

Am just about to replace the cambelt on my newly-acquired Disco 300Tdi as I
had no history with the vehicle. (Stuff arrived fine, thanks.) When I've
got the timing cover off, how can I tell whether the engine needs Kit 1, Kit
2 or nothing? Is there anything I should look for? There's no yellow square
of paint on the head AFAICS.

According to my info that vehicle should have Option Kit 1 fitted,
STC4095K - may be superceeded to STC4095L at some dealers. To be
sure I'd check this with a main dealer since you imply there is
some sort of issue with warranty.

As far as I can make out there is no other visible way of being certain
that a mod has been done. Speaking personaly, you have the choice of
doing it anyway or looking at the condition of the old belt and assessing
whether you think it needs doing. The usual symptom of needing a mod
kit is there being around 5-10mm chewed off the outside (away from the
block) of the belt. If this hasn't happened, well, I know what I'd do..

With the timing case cover off, look at the timing belt pulley on the end
of the crankshaft. If this has a couple of thin steel guide rings spot
welded to the front and back of the pulley then the conversion has probably
been done. We sell a lot of kit 2's at work because it actually works out
cheaper to buy that if the customer wants to replace the idler and
tensioner.

If it ain't broke... My thoughts exactly. If there is evidence of wear,
however, how would I know which kit was needed? There's a big difference in
price.

I would not worry about it Paul.

I only ever fit kit 2. never had any problems and I have fitted hundreds
of them.

It's all down to the VIN number. Have a search on the web to find out
which ones. I don't publish them myself just in case I've dropped one...
