Perhaps some one could enlighten me Why on earth do insurers want me to
fit a thatcham category 1 alarm to a 10 year old discovery when the original
factory alarm and immobiliser works perfectly!!!It means the premium is
cheaper by £50 but I have to pay £135 for the alarm

Cat 1 alarm a better risk as it is more resileant to bypassing

Alarms are not just there to go off but must resist the attempts to disarm
them.

Higher the category the better the integrity of the alarm.
Depends how willing you are to trust the alarm system you have.

You could go overboard and fit the most expensive, then you have to worry
whether they are nicking the car or the alarm !!

Friend in SA once had a bullion / jewellery store and installed the best
defence he could against ram raiders. Sure enough they turned up and rammed
the shutters which stood the test very well ......unfortunately the walls on
each side did not and fell down. Moral, get what's appropriate.

Stop the joyriders but forget the determined, whatever you do they will get
away. and try and fit a Tracker in a Defender !!!!

Norwich Union by any chance? I've just had exactly the same with the 91
200tdi I've just bought. No mention of it when changing our policy. But,
when the certificate arrived, in the alarm section it said "Thatcham
category 1 alarm to be fitted within 1 month". No great hassle 'cos I'm
planning on fitting one anyway.

Change the Insurance company !

With all the insurance companys I have used, thay have asked if I have an
alarm, I told them it has, and they said ok

Try NFU or Esure

I had the same problem so I changed my insurance company (after 30years with
them) Went to NFU.
