Hi Can anyone help with the following. Recently my suspension has gone really stiff to the point it feels like wheels are hard rubber and have no give in the suspension whatsoever. The suspension raises as it should. the compressor is fairly new. This all happened before i had to change lower arm suspension bushes which was properly caused by the hard ride. I fitted poly bushes which i know is a mistake but as i have said the ride went stiff before these where changed. Any ideas that it may be something simple before i put it into a garage ???? would appreciate any advise as i am now starting to hate this car and it is being shaken to bits. to further compound this the steering doesn't feel right and lose engine revs when cornering. Fitted a new lower steering UJ when the lower suspension bushes where fitted. Note also that it is both axles that have the hard ride ????

Have you checked for fault codes?
There might not be any warning lights, but there can still be stored codes that may give you a clue as to what is going on.

I have read of serious issues wth polys on D3/4, some have snapped lower arms in two as the bush was so restrictive.

Tbh there is not much that will cause a hard ride on the 3/4 models, silly large wheels with low profie tyres are a bad idea, the dampers are just that dampers, the air bags only do what they are told, so they are ok.
Range rover sport front lower amrs fit, but they also gve a slightly harsher ride over std disco arms.

Does the susepsion travel its full range from access to off road mode cleanly and smoothly?

Engine mounts good/leaking/pipes still connected?

Hi Lynall

thanks for response. i had diagnostics carried out and nothing found. i had an advisory at last mot that lower front suspension bushes required replacing. i was working away a the time and need the car. So i mistakenly bought poly bushes and kept them in the car in readiness for when i had time to get them changed. Eventually my lower steering UJ seized so had no choice but to get that changed and got the ply bushes fitted as well. i didn't use my regular garage as was working out of town and had no choice but to go elsewhere. Needless to say the suspension was hard before the bushes where fitted but went worse after. I had the 4 wheel alignment carried out as well. the suspension raises and lowers as it should. no warning lights. A bit slower at raising than it used to be. compressor is 18 months old. i read some where that there is a cross link valve that can become wedged open which could send the wrong signals to the ECR. Any way i have the car booked to go into my local garage for 2 July. might have to bite the bullet and get a new set of lower suspension arms complete with bushes. on another note the suspension is also stiff on the rear axle as well. used to be such a comfortable car to drive.

The only reason I can think of for very hard suspension is the shocks seizing up. I've see a couple of shocks seize over the years, but to have 4 seize on one vehicle would be virtually impossible.

Susp slow to rise might be the poly bushes.
As for the hard ride I am at a loss.
What size wheels have you got fitted?

Pic from another forum, Iirc guy was a bit of an off roader so car getting more stick than most discos when this happened.
