try rotating the engine, either put everything back and run her for a few seconds or turn the pully bolt, if the mechinism inside the pump as stopped in a perticular position you wont be able to pump the..er pump.

Think i've missed something with this egr valve, if you fit a blank at the bottom, then bolt the thing back together again does that not suffice without completely removing the valve, piping and changing the hose, or crimping the pipe leading into the intercooler hose.
Thought that this would stop it sucking exhaust gasses into the manafold, or have I missed a point here and done it wrong.
I guess removing all the other bits gives you a bit more space, is that the reason??

No you are on the ball mate! It's just that some of us like to take the EGR right off and stamp on it for about 10 minutes,which then leaves you with a hole between the top of the intercooler & inlet manifold, hence new hose!
What matters is that the bloody thing is blanked off one way or another.
rather than stamping on yer egr valve, take it to yer local steelership and **** it throught their window, that usually get's more satisfaction. Best done at night though.

I've just got an EGR blanking plate and new hose to do the job this weekend. Most people mention cleaning out the inlet manifold as well, whats the chances of having to replace the inlet manifold gasket if I take it off? It's just I've read in the Haynes manual that you need to take the exhaust manifold off to replace the inlet gasket because they share one between them and it sound like a lot of hassel!
They do but just take the bolts out that hold the inlet manafold on, yes there are a couple that share the exhaust but leave the exhaust alone. The inlet manafold on mine liffted off with no gasket damage, so a quick wash out coated with a smear of hylomar and back on again.
Once you start you will see what I mean, I made a blank out of a bit of 6mm plate, took about 30mins. once you take off the two bolts at the bottom flange you will see that there is a spacer with two gaskets on it, if you peel them off they can be applied to the fabricated blank, a bit of exhaust paste and hey presto. I never used the spacer, didn't see a need for it and the bolts were not long enough anyway.
Should take about 45mins, best if you have a wiggly 3/8 extention. Didn't make any difference to the power though.

When you say noisy is it with vibration as well? It could be propshaft uj's maybe.
Had one of those little Daihatsu Hijet diesel vans in our workshop the other day that was absolutely gutless and wouldn't rev for toffee. The propshaft uj's were badly worn and allowing the shaft to go any which way but round zapping most of the power.
