Hi everyone im new to the forum hope someone can help me?

my problem is black smoke but only about 2300rpm and upwards.
the car starts every time and runs good apart from when i reach
this magic rpm and then i get the smoke. untill i take my foot off
then its all back to normal.
as this only happens from this rpm do you think it could be the TURBO?
you can still feel and hear the turbo though so i dont know.
any help will be much appreciated.

Black smoke is caused by overfuelling. How long is it since you changed your air filter? Check all your turbo/intercooler hoses for cracks/splits. Have you had a new timing belt recently and if so was it ok before?

checked filter looks clean no splits in pipes as far as i can see.
dont know about belt only had the disco few months and it had a service
before i bought it. could this be the problem?

It's unlikely to be the turbo. It could be that the pump has been messed about with in an effort to squeeze a bit more power out of it, or that the timing is slightly out. Possibly your injectors are past their best. Lots of diesels produce black smoke under acceleration it's probably not going to be anything terminal. More likely to be a combination of several minor things. I would start by putting a new air and fuel filter in and see if that makes any difference.

Thanks for the info.changed fuel filter and put injector cleaner in today
think its done the trick as it feels much better to drive.
but im not 100% sure as ive been told not to boot it with the injector cleaner in? have to wait and see.
Also ive been thinking of blanking the egr valve.
is this worth doing?

Yes, it is, when you do this be sure to clean out the intercooler at the same time and put a new top hose on after dumping the EGR plumbing. Cost of blanking plate and top hose about £20 from Ebay.

If you have a cat in the exhaust it's REALLY worth changing it for a Defender non-cat pipe. About £21.25+vat from Paddocks.

Cheers
Dave

Thanks biglad i will def do these two things.
How do i go about cleaning the cooler do i have to remove it
or can it be flushed through just disconnecting the hoses?
Thanks again.

Hi there, you need to disconnected top & bottom hoses and remove from the engine bay, then wash out with a solvent like White Spirits. I left mine soaking overnight and then very carefully dried it, but reinstallation.

Also the fuel sedimenter is worth cleaning. Although having said that I've been putting off doing mine for nearly a year now...

Is the sedimenter hard to remove? i meant to do mine when i replaced the boot floor. as it was easy to get at but it completley slipped my mind.

Sedimenter is worth cleaning but its not going to cause your black smoke.

Sedimenter can be a pig of a job, its sitting covered in wet filth and doesn't get looked at that often - result: it doesn't always go back together so well.

You can just drain the sedimenter and that will give it a bit of a clear out; water, small debris and gunk.

If nothing flows from it, poke it with a stick until it runs through - mine had a bit of gunge which once poked about a bit cleared and clear fresh diesel started running.
