Disco 3 starting issues

Sorry another question. As my battery read 12.2 could I take the car out for a run say 30 mins then test the battery on return and then leave over night and test again. Just looking at options I have or would this be pointless?

no probs

i must admit I would worry in case the battery is duff and leaves u stranded miles from home , particularly if urs is an auto that can’t be simply towed and would need a flatbed to be lifted onto

Plus when there’s a risk of a bad battery it can cause further issues with ur alternator , sorry to be the one with doom and gloom, lol ,

fingers crossed for tomorrow and finally gets sorted out , plse let us know how u get on

Just as a reference to the noise I get when starting it's exactly the same as in this video (at 2.40 into video) the winding sound.

1st port of call in the morning is battery check.

fingers crossed it’s just the battery

just looked ref starter motor and the genuine ones are made by Denso

So I suppose if u did need to replace it ur looking around £400 plus labour , however I’ll have a look around for u as I think u can replace the solonoid on its own saving u a lot of money

may i ask have u checked ur earths as well with ur multimeter please , as that can also cause issues , can tell u where the earths are if ur u sure

Update
My local garage agreed to pop round to my home and inspect my car. The battery tested slightly low. However the mechanic stated the sound I'm hearing is in fact the starter not engaging. He stated in some cases the flywheel could be damaged also but this is very rare.

Thanks for the links. A new starter and bracket ordered hopefully here Wednesday. Car booked in Thursday the battery will be charged then and tested on any voltage drop. Mechanic stated approx 1.5 - 2 hours labour for the starter motor. Fingers crossed flywheel isn't damaged. Will update the thread Thursday.

See post number 9:)
Thank you for your input. Everyone who has commented has helped so a big thank you to all.
I've learnt a lot from this thread which lead me to do loads of research on batteries and starters which has kept me occupied. Let's hope Thursday goes ok.

New starter fitted this morning. 1.5hrs labour and the car starts perfect now. Once again a big thanks to all who gave advice it truly is appreciated. Car is in good health I'm on the mend so all good.

Until next time, undoubtedly there will be a next time as it's a disco :)
Stay safe
Jay

Yeah I was expecting something else to be wrong. Garage checked battery and earths as you suggested and all was good. I'm lucky to have a good garage I can trust.

Ur so welcome , always a team effort on this forum , indeed great u have an honest garage and it’s all sorted out

Hi all. So since having the starter replaced i haven't had any issues with the car starting but do have a strange gremlin I'm hoping to pinpoint. On first start-up of the day I get special programmes not available bong but it instantly clears and can use the programs select as normal. As mentioned earlier in the thread I again questioned the battery. Had it tested at kwik fit and they replaced it under warranty as they wasn't sure from the readings if the battery was at fault. Since new battery fitted I still get the bong but it clears soon as the error pops up and all seems ok no errors on dash or suspension issues. I've cycled through all modes and all is ok. Is this just a gremlin I should live with as it doesn't come on after the initial start or is this something I should investigate more. Thanks

Buy one of the cheap volt meters from ebay that plugs into your cig lighter, then you can see volts before starting car and straight away once its running.
It could be something draining the battery overnight, tracker/phone charger/dash cam/interior light staying on, ones over row 3 seats are not on auto with the rest of them and are hard to see unless you are actually looking at them.

Thanks for the reply. I will check interior lights tonight I don't have chargers plugged in or a dash can only thing I have plugged in is an aux cable which I leave in all the time. Wouldn't of thought that would cause battery drain would it?

Plus 1 ref the plug in meter , something like this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/303956259377?hash=item46c5347231:g:vuQAAOSwObZgdAC7

indeed left on interior lights can drain the battery after a few hours, particularly if there still the old halogen type, always best to replace them with Led bulbs

u can turn them off by pressing and holding the centre button on the front overhead light, ur then see “ lights off “ on ur instrument panel , handy if u have ur boot open for a prolonged length of time to save the battery from being drained

plus regardless it being a new battery they should always be charged before fitting , indeed just a cable shouldn’t cause any drain if it hasn’t got anything plugged into it

as suggested get one of the plug in volt meters, plug it it and read the voltage just with the ign on, should be a min of 12.6 Vdc

also hope that helps

Checked interior lights all seem to be off correctly but I've turned them off to see if that makes any difference. Will order the volt meter reader. I was told the battery was fully charged when fitted. The error just flicks on for a mili second then clears going to check for anything stuck in the dial which could be causing the car to think it's not off when starting. Whilst I'm here is it easy to change the bulb that is for the gear select? All others are working like ride height select,low/high range and the lights on the special programmes. Is it a case of pulling off the top of the gear selector and carefully taking off the surround? Thanks for your valuable input as always.

Hiya

alas there’s a circuit board so no separate bulbs , found the part number for u , can then have a look on eBay etc, just make sure the pcb boards come with it

Hope that helps

Some diagrams as well for u

Is it the correct battery? needs to be a 019, take a look as they eat batteries, cheap ones a year, Exide 2 yrs and Yuasa 3 yrs.
