hi still using oil no blue smoke out the back i think the valve stem seals are ok.
could be the rear oil seal but would expect to see drips of oil on the floor.
no smoke out of the exaust.
i am thinking of rebuilding another v8 the whole engine then swapping.
if the the valve stem seals are leaking can these be changed without taking the head off.
thanks

With worn valve seals you will get smoke on starting first thing in the morning when oil has had time to drain down into the combustion chamber and valve heads and thats it, with worn bores the smoke will be seen when flooring the throttle from tickover.

Dont know about the D2 but D1 has seals only on the inlet valves and I've never had to do it, but i'm sure they can be replaced without removing the valve and the seal positions it's self when the engine is started.

The Thor V8 has seals on all valves and they are a press fit on the valve guides.

There's not exactly a huge amount of oil around the valve gear, and you can check easily by going up to say 60mph, taking your foot off the throttle and slowing down to 30 or so, then put your foot down while watching your mirror.

Any oil that is sucked down past the seals will show as blue smoke as you put your foot down.

Engines running a weak mixture or on gas tend to use more oil.

peter thanks for that ,dont think it is the seals as no smoke and no smoke on start up ,must be the rear oil seal.
.
by the way can the valve stem seals be replaced without taking the head off as i dont fancy thay again.

many thanks dave

If you can make up something to hold the valve springs down while you take the cotters out, yes. The piston can be at TDC, but there's a bit of space for the valve to move down, so you'd need to either make up something that can go in through the plug hole and hold the valve head one at a time (I've seen that done on the Rolls-Royce B series engines) or try and compress them in place and hope you can get enough stroke on the compressor using the piston to stop the valve going too far.

I'd be sceptical that you were losing that much oil from the rear main, it would be all over the underside of the gearbox etc.

I checked my oil again today, it has gone from just over 4mm above the high mark to 1mm over the high mark in 1500 miles. We are going down to Devon tomorrow, so I'll check it again Thursday and see what we used, it's about a 550-600 mile round trip.

peter tryed flooring it no smoke and no smoke in the morning, at a loss as to were the oil is going no leaks any where else have oil on the underside of the bell housing but not enough to drip or flood the floor.
so i cannot under stand where its going, it should be blowing out blue smoke but it not.
not in the water so i dont know.
thanks dave

It has gone down by about 3 - 4 mm, but was overfull to start with.

I's also on a bit of a slope forward outside the house, while it is level outside the factory, so may be looking worse than it actually is.
