Not my final solution, but will do for now.
For anyone interested these are 102 litre, tough as old boots, have slots through the lids and boxes to enable then to be strapped down and are IMG_20190521_133354a.jpg £8.99 from Costco.

I never thought of that! Right, if the dogs are in two of the crates then where does all the other stuff that won't fit in the remaining two go?:)

While we are away the dogs would fit into the local kennel. If we had dogs.....
    Our cats are fine.

Oh no! Dogs go with you cats into cattery.:) But as you don't have any it is an irrelevant consideration.:(

Cats stay home and we pay someone to come in and feed them. They are much happier, it is way cheaper than a cattery and their care does not rule our lives. Dogs OTOH do not take well to separation and so they dictate your choices.
Don't get me wrong, I love dogs. We always had a dog when I was a kid and I miss having them about. We just cannot give them the time or attention they need.
