Can anybody help,
My disco started making a slight ticking noise in the engine two weeks ago but now suddenly its got quite a lot louder. when i turn the engine off it makes a noise like back preasure. the engine has no loss of power and drives normal. I have been told that the head gasket has gone but im unsure as there is no mayo in the oil or water and no steam from the exhaust:mad:

The copper washers under the injectors can leak giving symptoms like you describe. Put your hand over the injectors at tickover you might feel a bit of a blow. Happened to the first disco I had and it's pennies to fix.

Bollocks beat me to it, so I'l add a bit, spray bottle and squirt water when its runnin, but may just need a nip up, on the other hand it may be ready to pop out.

David,
Thanks for your reply,
Checked this today and no change also checked and reset all my valve clearances again no change.
Any other thoughts would be great.

I would check the vacuum pump as my 300 did exactly the same - it still went fine but got louder and louder untill I got scared. It will be a broken spring in it or just plain knackered.

Cheap to fix though and my brakes worked better afterwards.

The gasket goes at the back of the head and combustion gases leak straight out into the air.

Ok here is what I would do now, get a length of hose, stick one end in yer ear and use it as a stefescope, I actually have the proper thing but this works just as well. Bet you find exactly where it is coming from, get yer wifes pocket mirror fing and a torch and seek it out.

I have a very sim' noise (probably the same thing): I hear it like a little tapping or ticking.. which seems to sit just above the engine noise and gets quicker with tick over speed?

I've been trying to put my ear close the engine in diff' places to se if I can identify the location - and it seems (although I can't be sure) to be around the middle of the block on the drivers side of the engine.

I've run cars before which where prone to head gasket failure (but it wes bye bye to the car when that happened), so am scared of the same thing on the disco... Is this a big issue on the disco or just me being a wimp?

I too have been told to check the vacuum pump - But don't know how.

I've checked the injectors (or as best I can) - probably not done it right.. but I can't indentify a leak there.

I would be interested in some more indepth details and your progress

That's exactly where your vacuum pump is.
The only way to be sure is to replace it (about 85 quid).
Get a big screwdriver on it, with your ear against the handle, and have a good listen.
