Disco 1 - in two gears at once?

Evening, all
I have a 300tdi Disco which has been brilliant until a couple of weeks ago. Stuck it in reverse, backed up and felt like the handbrake had come on. Then wouldn`t go forwards either, then gearlevel went "floppy" as if it had jumped out of the gate. Then it all went back in and after much wrestling with said gearlever, managed to find all the gears again. Anyone come across it before I take it all to bits? It`s not done it since but every now and then it feels very jerky in reverse, almost as if it`s trying to engage two gears at once. Plenty of slack in the handbrake cable, as well.

I'd remove the centre comsole and have a look at the bias plate/gear linkages .. and also remove the handbrake drum and check there's shoes with material on them, or for anything else broken ..

Many thanks for that. Had the handbrake drum off about a month ago when I did the prop couplings just to have a look and all seemed fine then. Still, it`s a Landie so that`s not a lot to go on, I know!
