Hi the bearing on my 300tdi Disco 1 (1995 model) alternator is going and I intend to re build the alternator (it charges fine) but am looking for a replacement short term. I have been quoted some silly prices for an alternator and am looking to find one at a reasonable price!
The parts suppliers say there is a few types fitted to my car, can any one confirm if it is a Magnetti Marelli A127-65 as all the marking have come off mine!
Any help or advice would be great!!!
Many thanks
Rob

Is it like this one with the cooling fan on the outside of the casing?

Or is it like this one with no cooling fan on the outside, and usually with a multi-v-pully?

If it's like the second one, forget it! the bearings seize up and spin in the casing, making the case oversize, you'll need to find another one from somewhere.
If on the otherhand it's like the first one, then contact " 8616petert " on ebay, he sells kits to refurb most alternators, I've had a few for this type of alternator, as it's popular on British cars. good guy to deal with. I've even had a new 100 amp version for just over £45 from him.

I reckon gaffer about summed it up there.

You can find the same magnetti alternator on all sorts of vehicles....the last disco I bought had one off a GM car on it....BUT.you may want to put your pulley on any unit you get or your rev counter may read off.I know paddocks list different belts for later discos as they changed the pulley size around 96/7...lucky me,I got one built end of december 96!

The last numbers seem to be the amp output so depending on what kit your disco is fitted with and wether you plan to tow or add more you may want to go for the most you can.In the UK that seems to be 100amps in run of the mill units (Ive had lorries with 55a ones though!) but yu can get bigger ones built and in the US 200a ones arent unusual. But 100a ones seem to do alright for most things,as far as I know.

Thanks for the info. I tend to use the Disco for normal road use and off roading at my local Parkwood site so a 100a should be fine. I will have a look at the alternator over the weekend and take it from there!
Thanks for the help and advice.
Best wishes
Rob
