Dim headlight problem

My headlights have gone off! I have sidelights, and I can flash the main beam, but dipped or main don't work when I switch them on. If I short the terminals for dipped they come on, but are about 1/2 normal brightness at best. I suspected a faulty switch, so I bought a new one, but it didn't help. Any ideas?

Forgot to mention, it's a 1991 Defender, is the relay in the same place?

Think so but could be wrong, its a big red / orange relay had this with mine but mine's an 1988 model

The relay seems to be OK, I tried connecting a jump wire between the terminals and id didn't work (I found that on another forum!). The only thing I can think of now is the indicator stalk switch. Any other ideas before I go out & buy one, i case I'm wasting my money? The switch I have is only about 18 months old.

Have you checked all the connectors are properly pushed together behind the headlights?

Had a problem with mine not working after the headlight relay upgrade and it was down to one loose earth behind the headlight!
