hi again

my next question is, i have a slightly notchy gearchange when changing from 3rd or 4th to 1st or 2nd, by that i mean its sometimes difficult to move the gearstick over to the left to get into 1st or 2nd, hope this makes sense to you guys, also my clutch bite point is very low, could these two problems be related or is the notchy change something that wears out in the selector mechanism?

cheers
Gary

When I had this issue, it was the clutch release bearing and it cost £800 to fix, though the master cylinder (first suspect) didn't actually need doing, so I could have saved £200 if I didn't have that replaced.

jeeeesssssssss..... Garages are expensive. The actual relese bearings are about a tenner.

Yeah but I had a new clutch kit as it would have been silly not to. IIRC it was about 7hrs labour. I could probably have got someone to do it for less but he was a Land Rover specialist. The previous garage I used (where I took my old saloon car to) refused to touch my Freelander. The owner/mechanic was like "Why did you buy one of those?!" when he first saw it and then he told me where to take it. He seemed somewhat bemused lol.

Not sure what model you have, but on my petrol the rod from the gear lever to the gearbox is held on by a roll pin through it at the G box end ,if this pin wears the rod will not twist /rotate fully and gear selection is difficult.
Worse case the circlip holding the pin in rotates and the pin falls out
I had this happen half way round a roundabout on the A5 in Shrewsbury it traps you in whatever gear you were in ( bit of a panic moment trying to select third only to have the lever wobble about in your hand)
Repaired mine with a m6 bolt and nylock nut
