Difference in turbos between early and later

i bought a spare 19j engine for my 90 and the top pipe on the turbo is different the original one has like a brake pipe and the spares one has the 300tdi style pipe bolt with hole will post pics later will they be interchangeable?

From memory no, nor are the manifolds, but I could be wrong, its been ten years from doing my turbo. I know there are two different turbos, manifolds and down pipes, I know the manifolds and downpipes are different but I dont think the turbos were, different oil feed and drain but interchangable. Just that garrett became air research.

Are the engine mounts the same on the turbo compared to the NA? I fitted a NA to my 109 series 3 safari , was thinking of going to a turbo for the hills but not sure if its worth it?

Engine mounts are the same. Injection pump has a boost diaphragm housing, and the exhaust is different.

If I find a good example should just fit straight in without any further mods apart from new pipes is that right?

Yes i just fitted a later one to mine had to really fiddle with the oil pipes to change them but runs fine exhaust is different as well

Probably just an exhaust downpipe if you can find a 2.5TD with the fuel pump and turbocharger on it already.

Is it worth the change. If you don't thrash them are they a better option? Seem to remember a lot of complaints when the 200 and 300 came I being a better option. But for a series the standard 2.5 rid seems a good choice is that right? Just want to be able to pull up a hill a bit better.

I don't think a 2.5TD is going to give spectacular performance in a 109, and the 2.5NA is one of the better engines landrover made.
Personally, I doubt if I would bother, if I wanted to re-engine a 109, I would go for a 2.5 petrol, a V8, or a non landrover engine.
But unless I was planning to do huge mileages, I doubt if I would do anything at all if the 2.5NA is in good condition.
You might get some performance increase from a good service, especially setting the tappets, and checking the fuel pump timing, and getting an injector service.
