My Defender 110 rear diff whines on decelleration. I drained and refilled the oil, which contained some bronze deposits (like panning for gold!). It works fine, is there an additive to quieten it a bit that anyone's used sucessfully?

The hine is likly to be the bearing being tired. Do you have a Salisbury or a rover type rear axle? If it is rover type then the diffs are fairly easy to change over and not to difficult or expensive to get your hands on.

Thanks dag019. it's rover I think. I'll so a search on swapping it out. Sadly I quite enjoy having a list of jobs to do on it :)

I believe they can also be rebuilt, not something I have done as I have a salisbury. I am also not sure what the differences are with the late model rear diffs what other models may be compatible. I'm sure a gown up will be along shortly to inform you.

Of course they can be rebuilt!
You need patience, 4 bearings and a new oil seal.
Instructions are in many Fred's here

Everything can be rebuilt! I meant rebuilt easily with basic tools. The salisbury diff needs a whole plethora of specialist tools to rebuild it.
