so I finally got round to changing the oil seal on my rear diff today, and I thought I'd share the info I used to guide me.

I used this guide off a different forum: Replacing the diff pinion oil seal. - LR4x4 - The Land Rover Forum

just a few observations I made:

1. You need either to be the lovechild of popeye and hercules or have an elephant kicking about to shift the center nut, mine was a nylock nut

With a generous amount of wd40, a bottle jack and a 24mm,1/2" drive socket on a breaker bar it can be done.

I did try and use the motors weight to shift it by shawing the breaker bar up against the sway arm and rocking the motor whilst out of gear, but it just kept falling out.

I used a steering lock wedged between the break pedal and drivers seat and put it in forward gear so the turning force on the bar didn't move the wheels.

Then I sprayed the center flange nut with wd40, put on the socket with bar and jacked up the end of the bar carefully and left it there for a wee while, then after 10mins, used BF&I to shift it.

WARNING: HERNIA ALERT! - I think I did some damage to myself: back and arms are killing :(

2. you may need to have a long, flat head screwdriver to hand to get the seal out. I then thought it would be a good idea to inspect the bearing, all looked good, but I guess it could be another "whilst I'm here" job.

3. When putting the seal back in, I used a bolt to gently tap into place with a hammer, all around the seal, as going at it with a hammer directly would have dented the splines.

4. When refilling, your going to need more than 1 liter of EP90, I have to get some more now.

anyway I hope this helps other newbies like myself.
