Hope someone can assist me in this, I've got a discovery 1 v8 auto and I've put 37 inch wheels on. Everything has gone well thus far with what I've had to do for them to go on. Now the last bit of the puzzle, as we all know D1 diff is 1.2 ratio with diff lock. The reason for changing is the larger wheels plus more torque in the slimy stuff,I've got a defender 1.4 ratio without diff lock. So question 1/ will this still work on mine without diff lock?
2/ can I take the diff lock bits off my 1.2 and put on 1.4?
If I've to buy more bits then I will leave the 1.4 as is when I put it on.
I await your response and views

Do you mean you have a transfer box from a defender, or a transfer box with defender ratios?

I was under the impression all defenders had diff lock;).

All Disco 1s had diff lock too.
Watching this with interest.
Especially as OP comes form our neck of the woods.....
when we is not in Frogland!!!

Hi everyone, omg I had a brain fart when I posted my question, what I meant to say is will the fact its from a earlier defender (1990s) will the diff lock actuation linkage be the same? Or can I cannibalise off the transfer box I be taking out?
This is me trying to make sense of the swapping them over. As I've said I'm doing this because of the huge wheels I got.
Is it possible to take the one off my truck with out having to remove automatic gearbox? I can see that 6bolts hold this to gearbox, four at rear and two partial hidden front ones. I don't own a engine hoist or transmission jack so I was going to use my big trolley jack with a cut down pallet for it to sit on as I remove (ratchet strap) holding box to small cut pallet. Plus I can manoeuvre it out as on wheels. This I will then do in reverse to install new one. Does this sound except able? I've heard taking the chassis brace bar off can be a pain so any advice?
Thanks for reading

Linkages are all in the same places.
Handbrakes I think are different. Change the complete rear drum so it accepts the landrover handbrake cable.

Easy method for fitting is threaded rod to help the transfer box slide on.to the output shaft/gear and not damage the seal.
