Diff lock function on 'foreign' cars

Dunno. I think most of the japs are not permanent 4wd. I had an Isuzu trooper a few years ago that had 2wd hi, and 4wd hi or lo, but the handbook said don't go over 35mph in 4wd. So most of the ones you see on the road are in fact big heavy trucks with rear wheel drive only. No wonder so many get crashed:rolleyes:
 
Most of them have a limited slip type of affair, viscous coupling or similar. (thats if they have anything at all, most of them rely on TC or other electronics).

Manually lock-able is better, I think anyway.
 
me works hilux says its got a diff lock.its only a little button to press.Tried it in mud and it made no difference.I like wrestling with me diff lock on me 110 i know it took so much effort to get it in its def not coming out!
 
aren't the jap motors like series landies.... 2wd with the option of selecting 4wd manually. i think most have auto free wheel hubs and i know the L200 got a rear diff lock

also yer "thats if they have anything" would infer that most dint got neither
 
I think some of us is getting confused boys and girls.


Discos, Defenders and RRs are Permanent four wheel drive.
There are THREE differentials, one in each axle, and one in the middle between the two propeller shafts. This means the work of driving is shared equally among all four wheels all the time, so the tyres don't get worn out and yopu getr a nice even grip all the time.
LandRovers usually can lock the CENTRE differential, which should only be used at LOW SPEEDS, which reduces the chances of getting stuck in rough terrain. (Those with traction control can't do that)

Most of the slitties are TWO wheel drive normally, with PART TIME 4 wheel drive on demand. I believe that few if any slitties have any sort of differential fitted between the prop shafts, so essentially they end up with teh two prop shafts locked together like Series landies when in Hi 4WD, or like Discos/Defenders in DiffLock, with the added ability as in all series and later Landies of going to LOW RANGE while in 4 WD.

So far so good ?

SOME slitties have also a DIFF LOCK button which locks the differential in the back axle. In 4wd Low range and the rear axle diff locked, a slitty might manage to be competent off road, but, I had to use my Disco in November last to pull two of them out of a muddy field up the road. They just seem to be able to get stuck where a carefully managed Disco doesn't.

A little technique helps too, of course, and my motto in slippy fields is to look carefully at the ground, stay on the higher (thus drier) bits, and use a 60 foot kevlar rope for recovery. Avoid wheel spin at all costs if you can. Once you break the grassy surface, up comes the slimy slippy mud.
