But on a vagely similar note - to drain the oil out of my axles i have a big plug with a slot in it. Stuck the biggest screw driver i could find in, turned with lots of force and nothing. not even a hint of budging. The axel is full of oil, i just feel its probably the same oil it left the factory with so any suggestions (not involving new axles / grinders) for getting it out appreciated!

I've got the handle off an old adjustable spanner spanner that broke. I cut the head off and filed the end down to a snug fit the slot (any suitable sized but of bar or old chisel would do). You can then turn the bar with a working adjustable spanner and get bags of torque on it.
